DJI OSMO Pocket Review - Unboxing - Setup

The DJI OSMO Pocket

Overview - Review - Unboxing - Setup

This week I have been finally able to get my hands on the latest OSMO from DJI called the OSMO Pocket, this literally miniaturised version of the original OSMO brings all the benefits along side some new smart features and increased performance.

Here is my Video Unboxing, Setup Guide and Feature Overview

DJI OSMO Pocket Unbox - Setup Guide & Overview (19 min 40 sec)

The Unit

The OSMO Pocket is a 3 axis stabilised hand held camera, it has the same 1/2.3 Inch sensor as the original OSMO, Mavic Air and Mavic Pro.
The camera is fitted to a 3 axis miniature gimbal that fixed to the main body.

This houses a small colour touch screen for viewing the live feed as well as controlling the cameras various features and has an integrated 875 mah non removable rechargeable battery, this is charged by a USB C port located on the base of the unit.

Below the screen is the multi connector where you slide on the adapter depending on your phone connection. The OSMO Pocket can be used standalone or for more functional and larger viewing you can connect up you compatible smartphone via this connector to give larger live view and controls via the DJI MIMO App.

Currently the OSMO Pocket only supports IOS via Lighting Port or Android via USB C compatible phones however people have has some success using an USB C to Micro USB adapter.
DJI Include both connectors in the box and these simply slide on and click in place, you can also reverse these to allow saver storage when not in use.

Finally below this connector you have the two main buttons, LED as well as the front mounted Mic, you have Record on the left and the multifunction button on the right,

There is also a second mic located in the base for noise canceling and improved audio and compared to the original OSMO its dramatically improved.

Moving around to the side you will see the Micro SD card slot, this supports cards up to 256GB

Overall moving around the OSMO Pocket its hard not to be just astonished by its small size and extreme light weigh, its simply tiny.

The Camera

The OSMO Pocket takes what DJI started with the Mavic Pro gimbal and puts that in a small hand held unit.

Its got a 1/2.3 Inch F2.0 Equiv 26mm auto focus lens, all new processing that allows recording of up to 4K 60fps as well as 1080P up to 120fps with slow-motion mode. This is recorded to the SD card at up to 100Mbps in H264 in both MOV and MP4 formats.

In stills its captures a 12MP 4000◊3000 pixels image on 4:3 on both JPG or JPG/DNG.

In the Box

The Pocket comes in a small cardboard container that contains the OSMO Pocket, a hard plastic protection holster, Manuals, two phone connections, USB C cable and a carry strap

In Use

All of the main functionality of the OSMO Pocket is available via the small touch screen, when you swipe from left to right you can play back revered footage or stills, swipe up from the bottom and you get access to the quick menu that allows you to recenter the gimbal, set its stabilisation reaction from normal to sport, flip the camera 180 or change the gimbal mode between Follow, Locked Pitch and FPV.

When you swipe from right to left you get the main camera controls for resolution and frame rate as well as the ability to set the smart modes like Panno, Time-Laps, Motion-Laps and Slow-motion.

Finally when you swipe down from the top you have access to the main settings menu for the unit, this includes changing the screen brightness, focus mode, screen view and the main device settings.

Quite frankly the new OSMO Pocket is unlike anything else out there, its takes what DJI did with the original OSMO and literally shrink it to the the size of a Mars Bar, with 4K 60fps at 100Mbps its producing great footage for a camera its size, its packed with tonís of features like Panno mode, Time-Laps, Motion-Laps and can be used both stand alone as well as with your compatible phone for larger live viewing and direct payback.

On of the massive changes is DJI have improved the audio dramatically and its actually very good now in calm conditions, with the additional accessories you also have the option for wireless connective via Bluetooth and Wifi and in the future an external mic adapter will allow you to improve the audio further still.

Out and about it is tiny in the hand and IMO you need to use it with a stand if there is any wind, if you want to tripod mount it you will also need an adapter as well as DJI make a expansion kit that includes the Tripod Adapter, the WIF & Bluetooth Wireless Base as well as a Pitch Wheel upgrade for those who want better control over the gimbal should you wish to have that.
If you donít what to but that kit you can do what I did and 3D print some brackets to give you some additional stability.

As it stands today if your looking for a small stabilised camera for taking footage or Vlogging then the OSMO Pocket is well worth a look.

In the US its Costs $349 and in the UK its £329.
