Tomboy build thread
Just starting my Tomboy so I can participate in the postals (Hilda Baker)
I have decided to go with the 44" version as the most suitable engine I have is a PAW-80 (0.8cc). Firstly - my plan is a copy of the original that appeared in Aeromodeller 1950 and the rest of the gang that have built from this plan all say there was an error on it regarding either wing or tailplane incidence. All ended up inserting between an 1/8 & 3/32 under the wing TE. Anyone have any comments on this ? I would like to draw in any corrections before I start that part of the build. Here is a completed one by Jaromir Pipek from the Czech Republic Mark |

I normally hate cutting out all those ribs but have found a neat way of doing it without getting too bored - take my cutting board inside and sit and cut them out while watching TV !
Then sandwhich them all together and sand to shape and file in the slots etc. I find thats allways the worst part of building a model. (I also usualy cut 4 or 5 extra ribs while I am at it - just in case of future repairs ) |

Have had a Tomboy since 1980, Mills .75 orig, and its been thrashed, but never crashed. A fantastic Smeed design. Very strongly suggest you extend the hardwood engine mounts an extra couple of inches (cm) into the next fusalage former. IMHO the way it is on the plan is weak, and this mod fixes that and adds minimal weight where you need it. C/G about 50% about right. Re. incidence, simply make sure the wing is at approx 1/8 'higher' than the stab (tailplane).Fit a D/T timer, good luck.

You beat me to it Mark.
This should be fun though as I'm building one for the same reason as you. I was going to put my Mills 75 in the 36" version, but maybe I'll change and do the 44". I've built 3 of Vic's Cherub's and everyone one of them flew perfectly fom the first flight. I'm expecting the same with this one. |

Gossie - good point on the engine bearers. Will do as you suggest as it is rather marginal.
Ian, 44" should be fine with the mills - after all you want a long slow flight. I have a throttle for the PAW so will be able to (hopefully) set the speed to not climb too much. I must say I am inclined to fit some kind of radio operated DT as well. Would nullify any flight attempt but rather that than lose the model. Also considering lightweight radio - but still fly her FF (Rx on but TX off) so that in the event of a thermal etc I could still bring her back. Not sure if that would be allowed under the current rules though...having an rx onboard and on, even if it is not being used. Will need to find out. I am sure someone will "cry fowl". Mark |

Sounds OK to me. They may cry foul, but you'll cry if you lose that PAW!

Yes he is! I was fortunate when I enlarged his Cherub and converted it to R/C electric to correspond with him. I managed to track him down to get approval of my butchering of his elegant design. He proof read the article I wrote and thanked me for asking his permission first. It was a thrill for me to hear from him as I've been an admirer of his work for so long.
The plan and article came out in AMI a couple of years ago (with a few mistakes in it - not by me I must add). Mark, did you manage to get those 'other' plans printed out? |

I don't see the need for a throttle on the PAW80, just put on a larger prop and turn back the compression! That way you can make the model fly at any altitude you want: I had a Matador (wish I had it back!) with a Mills 1.3 on it, and I would set it up so that the kids could start it and fly it. It would march about the field in nice, slow circles, gently burbling away to itself, around head height, with everyone enjoying the experience.
I sure wish those old kits were still available; they were tough, and fun! |

TLyttle - no need for a throttle, but my PAW has a carby fitted, so might make use of a threaded rod to lock in into the best postion of the day.
Ian, no I have not been able to print the plan out yet. Had to go away Friday/Sat for work and only just got back, but the plotters had been swopped around and now I need to install new drivers onto our network. Probably next week sometime. Have not got any further with the Tomboy yet. Today was 35º C so I cooked in the car driving home even with aircon. (Was a 950Km round trip) Tomorrow is supposed to be another cracker so hopefully I can get in a couple of test flights on both my Ebenerzer & Simplex. |

TLyttle - I like your description of your Tomboy flights.
Just what I would like to achieve myself. With a big enough tank one could get a good 20min flight at probably no higher than a couple of feet but our field is surrounded by trees and too much turbulation lower down. One needs to get up a bit of hight to have calm flight conditions if there is any hint of wind. Hmmm - How about tomy timer to control the throttel. start off at full tap then after say about 20 sec once she has some height it can throttle down to just enough to maintain level flight...... That would freak the purists in the comp out even further I bet...... |

All okay in theory, but this is f/f you know. The lightest drift moves them along, so you need a bit of area. Have a 2 inch to the foot Farman Moustique F/F model with a G Mark 2cc twin with a throttle worked by an old Tatone timer and about 15 sec full steam for it to rog and get some height, then on to cruise. You would be surprised how far this thing will go in a minute or so on idle. The idea is great, but a 20 minute flight would go a long way l feel, unless you get 'one of those special days'.

Yeah, I know, I was just being cynical and daydreaming of the "perfect" day and a perfect flight....
Went out to the field today and the wind was absolutely howling! I need to get back into carving some balsa to mellow out my frustrations. Gossie - did you find any errors to the plan or have to make incidence changes? Mark PAW-80 |
