I've always been a huge fan of the ECX 2wd platform. It's nice to see a new iteration of it, and for $159 with a licensed body, a bigger 550 brushed can, Spectrum radio and separate esc/receiver, it seems to offer a lot of bang for the buck.

I agree^^ I just wish they would sell them with a metal transmission (like Traxxas does with their 2wd brushed lineup) so a brushless system was a drop in mod, without having to buy the truck, the metal gears, and then the brushless system.

That would raise the price, which would make it less appealing to a lot of buyers. It would also deter sales of the brushless model.

I know it would raise the price, but seeing as how some competitors have a metal gear system I wonder if they have looked into doing the same somehow.

I even wonder how the trucks do with a lipo installed on the stock set up, and if the extra power from the lipo strips gears.

The trucks do fine with a lipo. The gears don't really become a concern until you go brushless, and even then, if you keep the slipper adjusted and/or use a softer punch control on the ESC, they'll usually hold up.
