2019 F3j/F5J in Vegas

OK folks getting ready for the big event in Las Vegas for 2019 - May 3-6, 2019.

It will once again be held in Sandy Valley at the same sod farm as last year. More details will follow.
It will likely be the exact same location on the farm but that will not be completely firm until a few weeks before the event.

Now for the schedule. I have had a couple of requests to have the F5J event Fri/Sat instead of Sun/Mon. I have given this a lot of consideration and have come to the conclusion that we need to keep the schedule the same as last year with F3J first on Fri/Sat and F5J on Sun/Mon. I know I can't please everyone, but you should at least understand my rationale. The F3J event is MUCH more intensive to get set up. If we finish F5J on Saturday we would have to quit quite early in order to allow the F3J field setup to be accomplished and allow for some practice. This allows the F3J guys to set up their winches and not have to move them. Having F3J first allows all of Thursday to be used for setup and practice and not interfere with the final day of the F5J event. This way we can fly until later in the afternoon on Monday for the flyoffs. We expect the F5J folks to be allowed to fly on another circle on the farm for practice on Saturday - the same as last year.

So - the field will be open on Thursday 5/2 at daylight for practice and setup for the F3J guys. Arrival for campers and RVs will depend on the location we are assigned on the farm (parking needs to be arranged appropriately). We will let you know as soon as we can.

We expect to have catered lunches each contest day the same as last year. Local community groups will provide the lunches. There will be a separate signup and cost for the lunches.

Last year very few people took advantage of the group rates we negotiated so this year you are on your own to make your hotel arrangements.

Registration is now open at: http://f3xevents.com/
Please be sure to register for the correct events, there are multiple open events!

Gordon Buckland and Jeff DuVal will be the coordinators for the F3J event and Jim Monaco and John Lovins will coordinate the F5J event.

I ordered great weather - so it should be a fun time!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Jim

New F3J rules

Will the new minimum wing loading rule be enforced?

Will we be using all mono on the winches or the same line setup as past years?

The J-Tour board is deliberating on this as we speak. This decision is up to them.

Share Expenses in LV?

Want to help keep the F3J/F5J USA Tour costs down? The Advisory Committees for both have opted to have a dedicated CD for both events this year. I have been asked to be that CD and am looking for someone who wants to share a room and/or car to help defray overall expenses for the Las Vegas F3j and F5J events coming up in May. I will be getting a room with 2 Queen beds at the Primm Valley Casino (this is where most of the guys stay) from Thurs 5/2 until Mon 5/6. I may or may not need to rent a car depending on responses to this inquiry...

If interested, please contact me ASAP!

Sandy, thanks for stepping up to be the CD for this event (I'll actually get to fly this year-woohoo!). This site still amazes me: grass circles in the middle of the freaking desert.

Here are the coordinates of the likely site. Exactly where on the farm we will be is subject to harvesting conditions. We will know about a week before the event the exact location. We asked for the same site and they said it would "probably" be OK - but not guaranteed.
3548'5.27"N
11541'32.23"W

PS - if you have specific questions like this feel free to email me.

OK boys and girls - the oracles of the F3J Tour have decided on the following changes for the 2019 season:
  1. Winches are now allowed to be all mono, with a 150m turnaround OR the current braided/mono combination with no limit on the length of the mono leg.
  2. No minimum wing loading

These changes were adopted to provide the minimum change to the current rules while allowing those preparing for the TS to use the new line rules.

The guidelines on the F3XEvents.com site will be updated shortly.

I will participate in the F5J event and am contemplating participating in the F3J event too.
The only hesitation I have is that I don't really want to take my Ober winch on the plane. Traveling from RI with 4 planes will be difficult enough.
Question:
Will there be enough winches so I can team up with pilots who will bring a winch?

Yes, there are plenty of winch setups here if you decide to enter.
