Monokote and Trim Solvent
What are we doing wrong????
tried the monokote and trim solvent to trim out one of our planes, this is the first time we have tried it. worked out all the air bubbles and let it set for more then 24 hours after that the monokote came right off, so what are we doing wrong??? and what is the difference between monokote and monokote trim sheets. and should we have used trim sheets other then monokote covering material to trim with. There is a difference between Monokote and trim sheets. Monokote has a heat activated glue on the back of it. I think it activates at 240F but you'd better double check that on the package. The trimsheets are more like stickers. You cut them to the desired shape, peel the back off, and stick them right on. No heat required. Of course they're just for trim work and patching.
I too have never mastered the rainbow coloured devil known as Monokote. Here are a few useful tips I've come across. Chean the surface throughly before doing anything to remove any sawdust. A dry Swiffer cloth is perfect for that. Next use a small pin to poke some tiny holes in the surface to allow air bubbles to escape. Don't poke too many holes though. Heat up your iron to the desired temp. Tack one end of the covering to the model and stretch it to the other. take the other edges in place. Use your heat gun to seal drum tight and smooth out any bubbles. You'll need a thick work glove for this job because the air gets very hot. There are a couple of books out from Model Airplane News on covering with Monokote that you may want to look at. |

I've never used the solvent, but from what I remember being told about it, it should have worked for you. I've used the trim sheets though. I learned that fuel will eat away at the adhesive on the trim though. I have to 1/4" wide stripes on my trainer, and they stay on, yet you can move them around since the adhesive isn't holding good. The trim isn't giving me a problem at all out on the wing were there is no fuel residue though.
