3 Days of ESL electric sailplane contesting in Birdsboro, PA JULY 5-7 2019

After last years feasco with the field access I got talked into trying this again a couple of weeks later with the idea the field issues will be taken care of. I know the day after the 4th is less than ideal but it was the best of the worst days available on our calendar.
Please see : http://www.flyesl.org/Contest.aspx?contestid=306
Friday will be an ALES League contest. Saturday and Sunday will be an US F5J Tour contest.

NO ALES CONTEST! The field will not be open to ESL until Friday at 10 AM so rather than have a 3 round ALES contest we will allow open practice from 10AM till dusk.

Saturday and Sunday will be an F5J tour event. There will be no fly-off rounds! All rounds will be 10 minutes and everyone will fly.
An approved F5J device will be required! If you would like to borrow one please contact me in advance.
This is one of ESL's favorite fields although the landing area may not be great depending on the wind direction, probably not flat but equal for everyone. There is plenty of varied terrain to kick off thermals. NO NO-Fly zones.
F5J winner receives a $25 gift card (Starbucks) and if there are lots of entries I'll figure out something special for the overall winner.
Other Information:
Sign In starts at 8:00 Pilots meeting at 8:45 First flight at 9AM and the plan is to use a standard ALES recording with 5 minutes between groups.
Friday and Saturday there will be no rounds starting after 4:31 PM and Sunday there will be no rounds starting after 2:29 PM. A short lunch break each day. No food provided. Please bring your own picnic and drinks.
The field will be available on Thursday for practice. There will be NO F5J practice on Friday until the ALES contest is complete.
Primitive camping is allowed. Porta potty on field.

I plan to attend!
Hope my family plans allow for all 3 days.
If not, it may be just Sat-Sun.

Ps

If you'd like to register but do not want to sign up to the ESL web site just let me know your name and AMA number and I'll get you on the list.
Registration on the field is acceptable but it makes it easier on me if you do so in advance.
Thanks,
Kerry

Kerry really looking forward to this event. I think it will be a lot of fun. Hopefully my wife doesn't schedule me for another Cape Cod adventure. Don't tell her but I would rather fly models than sit on the beach and watching my kids throw seaweed at each other.

Hotels - Potstown, PA is a better choice than Reading. It's an easier drive to the field and generally cheaper and more vacancies.
Some of the top pilots are signed up for this event come join us these guys are more than willing to help anyone of any skill level. Support the ESL and come fly.

Daniel Boone field has kicked my butt several times with unpredictable wind flow up and down the hill. If you haven't been there we fly more on the side of the hill verses the top so it's very deceiving as to how normal lift will behave compared to flat ground. You could be landing up or down hill also, or even on the slant. It really makes you think about how to judge distance and height to landing. You can also get into trouble on the down hill side of the field, flying farther out than normal. Flying over a valley is not a normal view for most of us flat landers. It helps to judge your plane size not angle from the trees as to the distance out. That's why this is my favorite field to fly on. You could say It has a lot of character.

I am surprised there are only 13 pilots registered . We could use a few more pilots to make it challenging for Oleg. This is one of his last contest, before the worlds.

Kerry, can you post the field coordinates or directions please.
I may be the only one that needs it, but just in case, somebody may be interested too
It has been a long time since I came to Daniel Boone field.

Looking forward to this event!
Would be nice to see more pilots, anybody else thinking of coming?!
I know Jon Garber is trying to make it happen, so we may have 3 team pilots attending!

Dick,

Looking forward to seeing the DESS boys again!

Unfortunately, Jon can't make this one. The good news is his WC planes should reach him possibly next week.

I'll be there either Friday evening or Saturday morning. What time are you guys getting there?

Brady, Oleg and I plan to leave from my house around 5am Fri. Barring the most ridiculous issues of traffic we hope to fly at the field middle of the afternoon.
See you there!

Dick
