Q40 Tailwind pictures.
I've built about a dozen of these; this one's the latest & greatest. Highplanes talked me into it because he said the high-wing arrangement produces the least amount of drag in the turns. Fizzwater drew the original plan, about 2004. The first ones were all wood (1/8" sheet balsa box, Q500 style, with a foam-core wing). I experimented with nose length, tail area, etc., till it was right then pulled a mold & now the fuses are fiberglass. The wing is built in one piece, continuous 3/32" balsa skin on top for compression strength. There's also a hefty spar inside. This design is as fast as anything & very well behaved; once it's off the ground it basically flies itself knife-edge and you just pulse the elevator to go around the racecourse. Altitude is controlled using rudder trim & slight corrections in bank angle (89 degrees to come out of the turn a little higher, 91 degrees to bring it down closer to the deck). Best time so far is a 1:05. My biggest issues have been keeping the wing on (2 steel pins through 1/8" plywood plates at the front finally solved that problem) and fighting the strong pull to the right on takeoff. Tore my hair out trying to figure out why, but they all do it. About 1/2 degree of left thrust makes them go straight ahead & doesn't seem to affect the flight trim at speed. There's an adventure in every bowl of Alpha-Bits! Cheers, Duane |

Rob,
Thanks! That particular color scheme is based on a couple of pictures I found on Airliners.Net ... I believe it's Skip Stewart's personal runabout. Not sure if he performs with it but he could probably teach us all a thing or two about what a Tailwind can do in skilled hands. Cheers, Duane |

Doug Brueshaber is my Father. I check this forum every now and again and stumbled on this thread. I'm amazed to see his name pop up at all. He passed when I was 11 and I still miss him 30 plus years later. Truth be told, you made my day. I still have a couple of his Sharks here at home as well as his top flite P-39 another flyer was kind enough to give me. I am still looking for his plans/kits. I would like to build one of his Napiers. I thought that plane was beautiful. Thanks again for sharing.

A Gager Estrellita was the first QM15 I built -
Here it is at the 87 Nats in Lincoln, with my friend Bob holding it up. I'm in the back, when my hair was still dark! |
