original manta

here's the main wing template for the original Manta. It is made from Readiboard, and I made a triangular section fuse to save weight. It wasn't exactly successful. I like to keep all the gear "inside", and the triangular section made it difficult. Aft of the wing was a single vertical sheet to hold the dihedral. The whole thing is pretty fragile. I think if I did it over, I would make a box section fuse with tapered plan view like the BW32 - more room inside, and stronger.

Here's a picture showing the progression from original manta through a larger MPF manta to the BW32. My fave is the BW32, most versatile flyer, and as slow as the original manta.

Very cool! Like the landing gear, I'll have to try that on mine! How does she ROG?

Hi ,Mike:
I really like your design and build one with landing gear but have no rear wheel steering.
I am puzzled where is the C.G of BW32 ? Thanks!
"How does she ROG? " -->It's still not yet first flight, maybe by hand launching

My CG came at 4" aft of motor mount. With the additional drag of gear pitching nose down, a bit farther aft might be better, though. Post Video if you can get some!

BW30 Maiden Flight

Got in a wonderful maiden flight this morning with my BW30 (roughly 30 inch wingspan due to size of foam sheet I used). Got 18 minute flight with a 450mah 2S battery.
Pics are right after completing the build, and post maiden at the Skymaster's indoor fly at the Ultimate Sports Arena in Pontiac Michigan.

From the hand toss launch to landing, the BW flew like it was on rails. Seriously, it was the best maiden I've ever had.
I landed once after about 3 minutes to adjust the battery location forward to change the CG, and add some expo to the rudder and elevator, but the rest of the flight was non-stop, at a steady even cruise rate. My thumbs started to get tired!

I had initially calculated a CG of 3.75 inches (~95mm) but I adjusted it to 3.25 inches (~83mm) behind the motor mount.

I'm thinking of attaching front wheel struts to the motor mount, and a rear wheel to the under slung rudder, simple! But then again, it looks so sleek without wheels, hmmm...

What a great design Mike! Let the variants begin!

It's possible to Rise Off Ground, but fail first time because less power!
As always then throw it by hand.

Mike's original wing span is 32",I enlarge to 43.3" and made a small change to join the fuselage.
It's really a good design and easy to diy and fly.
Mike, if you don't mind, I put it on to share it.

Looks like we have a winner here Mike. I'm already thinking about ailerons....I know, doesn't need them, but hey, why not.
