Hangar 9 XCub 60cc

Virtually the second this plane was announced, I jumped on the pre-order list! Big bush plane - yes please! Being from Pacific Northwest, I’m very partial to bush planes and have thoroughly enjoyed the Hangar 9 1/4 scale P/A-18 Super Cub (both gas & EP), Hangar 9 DHC-2 Beaver (gas & EP) and the 1/5 scale Carbon Cub (gas).

Most of the build list went together quickly and includes:

- Servo (aileron/Elev/Flaps): Savox 1258TG
- Taildragger RC servo extensions
- Rudder: Hitec HS-7956HR
- Rudder: Savox 1231SG
- LED system: Electrodynamics (Nav/anti-collision, wig/wag landing, beacon)
- IFlytalies instrument panel
- PR Bushwheel struts
- PR Bushwheel 8.75” (222mm) Tundra
- Air Top 200mm (7.87”) Tundra - Summer tires
- Jeti Duplex R10 Rex Assist
- Jeti Duplex Dual Mag Switch
- Jeti Central box 200
- (2) Jeti Duplex EX R3/RSW 2.4GHz Receiver
- Jeti Duplex EX R3 REX 900 MHz Receiver
- Jeti Duplex R7 Rex Assist

The hard part was power selection. Spent the better part of 2 months going back & forth between short list:

1. Saito FG-61TS
2. EME 70 twin w/auto-start
3. 12S EP setup

Finally pulled the trigger on the Saito...beautiful engine although twice the price of the 2-stroke gas and EP. Should sound more scale which is important to me :-)

Now that the engine is sorted, added a few things to the list

- RotoFlow - 16 ounce
- Tech-Aero Ignition BEC
- JC Super XCub prop

Let the build begin!

Let the stripping begin!

It’s always hard to tear into perfectly good covering...on the other hand it’s also hard to have a couple of thousand dollars in a model have it looking crappy after a few hours in the sun...and also have it look identical to the next guy with the same kit!

Let ‘er rip...

LED test

Wanted to check intensity level difference between the stock and the Electrodynamics landing lights. Setup:

- Electrodynamics controller
- Pulse light adapter (wig-wag )
- LiFe 2S
- The ED light is in their hi-intensity lens cover

The ED lights are much, much brighter on 2S. The stock lights are rated for 3S, but no nav, strobes and no wig-wig so I ditched the stock lights and re-wired the ED kit per full scale:

- nav
- anti-collision strobes
- beacon
- wig-wag landing

All controlled by ED controller with landing lights on seperate channel

Landing gear, wheel & tire weight analysis

Plan is to go with the PR Bushwheel spring setup on this model.

Wanted to weigh diff between the stock setup and the PR Bushwheel so I can sort out CG issues (size of batteries, tank, placement, alum spinner, etc.)

Stock:

Sprung gear assembly:

PR Bushwheel 8.75" wheels & tires

PR Bushwheel struts & axles:
