Ban Birds.
There's a new movement afoot at the FAA to have transponders aboard models to alert full scale aircraft in the vicinity.
About $250 each , most guys could not afford one , or would not want to spend the money, at least. I suppose Clubs could just buy one and mount it at the field somewhere , and they could alert the Aircraft at 33,000 feet that they were in an activity area. That shouldn't cause any real concern at that altitude. This 'Proactivity' is a little concerning, because I have yet to read a factual case of a model bringing down a Full Scale Aircraft. Hell, I've seen an Aircraft hit a GOOSE at 160 knots , and land safely with no windshield, and a Pilot blinded by Goose Blood. I believe the FAA should redirect their sight to Flying Fowls, rather than UAV's... |

If you want to get informed as to what the FAA is up to, start with the TCAS (target /collision avoidance) system that has been in the transport world for more than twenty-five years.
The FAA is moving forward with its Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) program: https://www.faa.gov/nextgen/programs/adsb/ ALL aircraft, including UASs (some types - for now) will be required to be in the program, and have the required onboard hardware. To get an idea of the leverage the FAA get's to employ, how about this situation: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/22/w...es-arrest.html These numbskulls face life in prison. That's the way the U.K. rolls. The FAA is lumping our sector of the hobby in with pranksters and mischievous clowns that mean to do harm. That's evolution for ya. The FAA is on solid footing. They don't need to wait to react to an aircraft being brought down by a UAS. They only need to imply that it could happen. But hey, folks are free to do whatever they want, right? Fly in the face of the FAA (pun intended) as it were. Just best have better lawyers than they do, and clear your calendar for an unscheduled "vacation" at a Gov'Ment "resort". EJ |

It's a different World, now, full of fear of what the mentally challenged will come up with for entertainment.
My friends fly off the runway at several Grassroots airports, connected with the activity by a ground based scanner. No 'incidents' with these model airplanes who become part of the movements. I remember being a member of the IMAA, and going to St. Clairsville Ohio to a Giant Scale Rallye. I witnessed 3 days of flying off the active runway in company with light twins as well as single engine aircraft. The model 'Air-boss' would alert model pilots of full scale activity, and they would either land if it was safe to do so, or just loiter at the far side of the field. Danville, VA,- Summitt DE,- Martin State Airport in Baltimore- just a few that encouraged we level headed modelers to participate. Those days are nearly gone. |

Yes, it is a different world. It always has been. Just because a person chooses to plant a push pin in the timeline doesn't mean the world wasn't always changing. But let's stick with our hobby and aviation, shall we?
I've been abiding by FAA regulations since I was sixteen years olds - forty-six years. It just isn't that hard. Has there been any regulations that I've railed against? No. Actually, I have no idea why particular regulations even exist, although the FAA does. And, they used my tax money to do so. Does that mean I have some ownership in their regulations? No. My licenses are a privilege, and not a right. If I go outside the guidelines of those licenses, I understand that the FAA has the right to revoke them. I'm good with that. The FAA has, and will continue to implement regulation of UASs and their use of airspace. Unfortunately, we're in that scope. How are we not? My R/C club flies from a closed runway at an uncontrolled (no FAA tower) airport. It is also a very busy parachute drop-zone. You can imagine how congested things get on nice days when a model fly-in is going on. Light aircraft traffic, models flying, and people literally falling from the sky. It all works - within FAA regulations. I have a respectable stash of model airplane kits, and plans (see pic). I've come to the realization that I will never build them all. Heck, I'll be happy if I can build 20% of them. There are also woodworking projects that I want to get to. Projects like kayaks and canoes. To me, at this point in my life, time matters. I've never realized how little of it I have to myself. EJ |

At 77, I 've realized there can't be a whole lot of time left for me, so I quarter myself in the shop doing all the things where I wouldn't mind dying, while I'm doing them. My little Japanese friend says they're the things that 'bring me joy'...
You keep all those plans and kits, if they bring peace in your heart.... you don't need to explain anything to anyone.... |

Actually, building the contents of kit boxes as intended- not collecting them - brings me peace, and satisfaction. That is what I wish I had more time for, therefore makes time more precious. Spending time railing on things that I cannot control, to me, is senseless.
I have three years to go to retirement. If I could retire tomorrow, I would. Although, the next three years puts my wife and I in the optimum position enjoy our hobbies and interests going forward. I know that you have several irons in the fire, project-wise. My favorite is the Sig Rascal ultralight (light sport?). A heck of an admirable undertaking. Although, I get the rise of the heat (interest) of a project, as well as the cooling of it. I hope the heat gets rekindled. EJ |

Aere any of those rolled in the tube plans by "Uncle Willie?" I miss that guy! He sure did nice work! There were times when he threw in an extra set of plans for some other airplane when I oredered from him and never charge extra for them. |

Some of those kits are very old. If the planes are folded, they literally become permanently molded to their shape. I unfold them, press them out, and roll them - print out - and store them in a cardboard tube. Many of the non-kit plans are from RCM Plans, back when that operation was still around. EJ |
