Question

ATX power supply

Hello, I bought an ATX PSU 500w to replace the psu of my anet a8.

Rather than cutting all useless wires I have remove them from the main board and sold only 2 wires (awg 12) for the 12v and 2 for the 5v (for a rpi). I also chunted PS_ON with ground but when I connect to 220v, there is 12v only for a few seconds (same for 5v). The fan of the PSU is also turning for a few seconds...

I don't think I have made a short-circuit but there is something wrong...

Any idea where it can comes from? Thank.

none of mine needed a load to stay on.
your printer is the 12v load anyway
it could be a faulty psu. or you shorted something
was the psu new ?

Many ATX power supplies require a load on the 5V and 3.3V rails to be able to provide full power on the 12V rail(s).

For that reason, even though I had a spare ATX power supply around when I upgraded the PS on my A8 I decided to spend the $20 on an HP DPS-600PB server power supply, It doesn't require any load on any of the rails and provides 47A of clean power on the 12V rail - plenty for an A8. I even designed a mounting bracket for it: DPS-600PB Power Supply Mount for Anet A8.
