Freewing F-5 Tiger II 80mm EDF

I ordered this one from MRC as a pnp set (since they were out of Arf+'s),

I prefer the Swiss airforce "Patrouille Suisse" one because of better visibility.

Here is a useful link to the specs on the original one :

While in Berlin a few years ago I took a video of the original Patroullie Suisse exhibition,

Although a somewhat older (2016) model, the Freewing EPO molding still seems pretty nice and quite smooth,

When adjusting for travel, the flaps need to be moved up all the way, so they "lock" properly and don't cause flutter

The Full Flying elevator linkage was stiffened with aluminum tubing (did not have the right carbon rod size).

The stock outrunner metal fan was removed, and replaced by a lighter and more efficient FMS inrunner fan,

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...EDF-fan&pp=100

The stock ESC (Hobbywing 80A) was retained for now (a 100A one is on its way) and re-programmed, it now pulls ~1900W at ~83A.

A view of the bifurcated outlet, and front inlets. They are far from perfect but should work ok ...

I prefer to test all servos thoroughly before the maiden, and the F-5 here is no exception ...

Sizewise, the F-5 is actually a bit smaller than the new Freewing L-39,

Had the maiden on mine yesterday, plus an additional four flights

Flies pretty nicely, quite fast due to it's relatively smaller size ... I took the heavy stock outrunner metal fan out and put an FMS inrunner fan in mine.

The first few flights I kept adjusting trims, CG and the the elevator-to-flaps mixing to get it just right.

All five takeoffs were without any flaps on a ~100ft packed dirt runway.

The very first landing without flaps was pretty exciting, it really helps to have a lot of flaps on this one to slow it down. Nevertheless if you bring the nose up a lot it won't stall - and eventually slow down nicely

I like the Swiss scheme a lot, very visible under most conditions (blue sky or some clouds).

Even though it's an older Freewing model, the foam molding seems pretty good on mine. The interior ducting could use some (major) work.

Sitting next to the Freewing A-4 Skyhawk makes the latter look like a tugboat

I found a red paint that is a pretty good match to the original red, "apple barrel flag red", I had done some work on the intakes,

When doing a routine inspection I realized one of the servo horn screws had vibrated off in flight I guess they don't use loctite.

It's all metal in there, so regular (blue) loctite should work fine. I've put Loctite Hysol on mine to make sure they stay in there for a while

Too bad Freewing does not include wingtip missiles with the Patrouille Suisse version, I ordered a set from MRC ...
