Build Log

F-22 Raptor 90mm EDF by Freewing

I got one of these from MRC during the pre-order sale, should be here middle of December

http://sz-freewing.com/productlist.aspx?t1=2&t2=26

https://www.motionrc.eu/collections/jets-and-ducted-fan

https://www.rc-castle.com/index.php?...DESC&limit=100

This thread in German : https://translate.google.com/transla...6perpage%3D100

The model has a wingspan of 106 cm, while the full scale one has a wingspan of 13.56 m :

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockhe...in_F-22_Raptor

so the scale here is 12.79 : 1 or roughly 13-th scale.

I am not sure I need another grey jet, but this one looks good on close inspection - and is my favorite size, 90mm.

I got the arf plus version, so will put in my own JetFan + HET inrunner power system. I never had the JePe one but saw it fly, and it was a great flier.

Nice pictures of the model have been posted here :

Have been experimenting with various ways of replicating the indium ITO rf reflective coating on the F-22 ... not so easy to do, I wish a clear canopy would be an option.

Also, on the real one after a while no two fuse / wing panels seem to have the same silvery shade ...

The full scale F-22 is quite aerobatic,

On the model the tailerons are huge and the moment is pretty short ... Plus the RTF weight on this one is quite low, almost a floater.

I am actually thinking that for the kind of wild aerobatics that the F-22 is capable of a 6S setup will be better, the wingspan on this thing is only 1.06m ... T/W on the real one is ~1.3 (1.14 full fuel) ... Keeping the weight in check will help.

My Su-35 turns on a dime even with the TV off (on a switch), more worried there about one of my FF elevators getting ripped out in midair

Here are some details on the JePe 90mm F-22, based on the FlyFly foam airframe (115 cm wingspan) :

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...29&perpage=100

The ducting was less than ideal, and JePe had to do major modifications.

JetLegend makes a nice turbine F-22 (1.6m ws) :

Here's some discussion of it on RCU :

There is also a smaller Skymaster one (1.4m ws) :

In regards to the paint & finish on the Freewing F-22 Raptor, it is interesting to notice that some full scale one have a very clean (and perhaps rather boring) paint job when they are fairly new - or even just out of the factory,

On some other F-22's that have gone through a few cycles of use & wear one notes that :

(a) there is clearly a very visible metallic sheen on many of the panels, and

(b) almost no two panels have the same shade / tint

.... which provides lots of opportunities for the use of acrylic metallic paints, suitable masks and an airbrush

I believe at some point LanXiang / Banana made an F-22 which (as is usual for their line) looked good on the internet but flew like %#@$, with parkflier hardware and ridiculous flimsy plastic landing gears tearing off on the maiden or soon thereafter

The wingspan on the LX one is 104.6 cm, so very close in size to the Freewing one (106 cm) .

The contrast with the Freewing F-22 here seems quite clear (to me), at last the latter was to some degree designed to be flown - more than just look good on the internet or kitchen table...

A more scale F-22 model would require first the use of a belt sander to bring down the wing thickness to close to the original

Plastic scale models often provide great inspiration on what can realistically be achieved on a scale model.

Here one nice example from Japan: http://www.3gfb.org/gallery/f-22raptor

It is interesting to note that some F-22 have a rather metallic look, while some others look like they have just a nice layer of grey paint.

So it's either that the factory paint is really thin and wears off ... or that some just aren't painted at all or finished in some sort of bare metal surface.
