Hi
I allways try to find lightest and easy to handle material for OpenHD-Copter
My personal goal with OpenHD:
As small and light little HD-race-copter, of course < 250gr
Range about 800m
Flight time about 10min
Stable video link with RSSI and mavlink
no gps, no long range
I am close :-)

Does anyone use two AirPi WiFi dongles with different frequencies? Is that the point, a more stable connection?

Does not work well with 2 on the Tx, best is to have more on the Rx side.
Like they say in the HAM Radio world " small mouth but big ears " More important to have a good RX antenna.
I use 3, one basic one that comes with the USB dongle and 2 others for longer range. Dipole and Patch.

Right now the Tx is an ASUS AC-56 0n 5.8

Hello, I am collecting information and making a list of components to build my OpenHD system and I have some doubts.

1. Would it be correct to use an ASUS USB-AC56 in the air unit with the stock antenna and a Pi Zero W and in the ground unit a single Alfa AWUS036ACH with two good antennas and a Pi 3B +? Or is it better two ASUS USB-AC56 also on the ground? Is it compatible with the current OpenHD image, plug and play?

2. Which antennas do you recommend for long range on an airplane, which on the ground and which on air with the setup of point one?

3.My intention is to fly the first few times with 1.2 GHz video in buckup mode in case there is a problem, does that frequency affect digital 5.8 in any way?

If you are going 5.8 then the AC-56 is the best choice.
1 Tx and 2 RX for diversity .
Lots of choice in 5.8 for antennas and just as many opinions but you should setup and debug the system with the stock ones first and only then change for longer range.
I can get down to -90 rssi without glitches using the Ac-56 and stock antennas.

Good examples here

Thanks for the tip on using the AC-56 on 5.8ghz. I had one for my desktop and was about to toss it out because it was too flaky with Windows 10. Just for fun I tried it with Open.HD and was amazed how much better RX signals were than the TP-Link TL-WN722N. I have plans to move to 5.8 at some point and will definitely be keeping this adapter around.

.
2.4 is more "penetrating" and WILL work better for LR
but.. it is the size of antennas on air side - 2.4 cloverleaf twice bigger

Thanks.

What is the reason why the ASUS USB-AC56 does not work in 2.4?

Have in mind that 1.2 video can cause big problems on 2.4 systems.
Both on WIFI and RC.

Speaking of own experience...

Where is the best starting point for OpenHD? The links on first post of this thread?

The Telegram link a few posts back seems like a stream of consciousness -- good for chatting and sharing but impossible to use as a reference.
