Unless you try and 3D it or do some blenders, you wont strip a karbon/nylon gear in flight, the loads on a pylon surfaces are REALLY small, even though airspeed is high the loads are tiny.

All MG will acheive is flying like shite due to slop.

Im getting bored of saying this

Always flew them with hs-55s and you can't get much weaker than than that. You do not want the slop MG give you. The plastic gears are going to be stronger than what they are connected to.

Well I have never flown MG in a pylon except on the "Rifle". That was probably because the control surfaces were like rusty barn doors.

So, if I go with Nylon, what do you think of these?

Those may be the ones I am using. I'll have to check. When I got mine, I went to a LHS and compared many for slop. They also fit the elevator tray and push rods perfectly.

Hi!

anyone tried the Castle Creations Thunderbird 54 AMP ESC Controller?

Should this be enough for a het 2W 4,7x4,7 ?

I used a TB 54 in a different plane with a 2w-20. apc 5x5 is about 55a but runs great as in-flight power is much lower. Using the bec to power three 65hb servos and with little airflow the esc comes down very warm but never too hot.

Is that on a 3 cell? and the built in Bec is working ok?

That's the ESC I'm using in my Rifle with MEGA 16/15/2, Hyperion 3S 1800 35C batteries, APC 4.1 x 4.1 prop. So far so good. About 20 flights. Full-throttle the whole time (2.5 min flights). No problems.

Hi!

That sounds great! And thats almost the same engine as the Het 2W.
You dont have an external bec?

APC prop you use?

Running an ESC above its limits is doable, if ya use a lot of WOT. Part throttle will quickly cook it.

Running an ESC above its limits and using the built in BEC is asking for a smoking hole in the ground, particularly if its a linear BEC (ie Thunderbird 54)

ESC makes heat, ESC getting ass handed to it makes more heat. LBEC makes heat. ESC+LBEC=Lotsa Heat=Smoke=160mph lawn dart.

Ive got one of those little CC sbec's in mine, I have a great hatred of built in BEC's I wish more ESC's didnt have them. Theyre are next to useless for high performance stuff.

external BEC is far less likely to go up in smoke if the ESC goes pop, so you still have control.

Maybe I missed something, but the TB 54 BEC should be ok if ran under 50 amps on 3s. Are you testing the amp limits?

I run one on my Sunracer but I am only pulling 35 amps. It always comes down scorching hot, but I have not found a castle controller that does not ome down blistering hot except the Ice series. My Phoenix 45 and 80 are always at the verge of meltdown, especially in a tight fiberglass plane.
