Build Log
Mick Reeves Spitfire Mk.IX, 1/6 Scale
I‘ve got a delivery today from UK: Mick Reeves’ Spitfire Mk.XI in 1/6 scale. It’s a pretty complete kit, featuring an epoxy fuselage, a wing kit that’ll be sheeted using Mick’s Proskin material, mechanical retracts, scale cockpit and lots of vacuum formed pieces.
Unfortunately I won’t be able to start the build before mid November, so this is just a little teaser... I have a build thread over at RCSB, too. In case anyone’s interested: https://www.rcscalebuilder.com/forum...TID=28794&PN=1 |

Ouch!, ....... just looked up the price, but then you usually have to pay for quality.

That's why I prefer to scratch build
But then any Spitfire is worth money and time just to fly them. . |

I just couldn’t resist: I had to take another look at the kit. So I started by checking if all the laser cut pieces were there - all present and accounted for.
Then, by old tradition of mine, I started building the tail feathers. I began with the rudder. It’s pretty straightforward to build. All ribs are just slid onto the frame, add the post, a little laser cut sheet for the leading edge and you’re done. Nice! ImagesView all Images in thread

Very Nice. The Spitfire is my favorite warbird. Will be following.

That pilot is outstanding. Then again, I suppose if he's 1/6 scale, that makes him the size of a GI Joe (the original ones from the '60s, not the newer tiny ones), so there's lots of room for authentic detail. He sure looks the part.
Good luck with the build; I'll be following! Steve |

The pilot is a figure purchased from a 1/6 scale shop, so the body is very articulated but also very heavy. For my Fokker D.VII I used a similar pilot and replaced the body with a light foam pieces held together with elastic bands. I kept only the head and the hands from the original pilot.

I started building the elevator stab. Generally it’s very nice laser cut balsa, easy to assemble without plans. There’s one detail though that’s a bit tricky: rib 1 isn’t prepared for the two joiner pieces that connect the stab halves. You need to cut out the front slot and cut off the tails a little to make room. On the main stab frame you need to cut a bit off the rear notch, too.
Add the trailing edge pieces first before starting to add the ribs for a stiffer frame. When gluing the ribs make sure everything is true. I used wood blocks (like Jenga pieces). ImagesView all Images in thread

All major RC components arrived today - motor, controller, servos, RX.
Motor: Dualsky XM6350EA-12 Controller: Hacker Master Spin 80 Pro Servos: 6x Hitec D85MG Retract servos: 2x Hitec HS-75BB RX: Spektrum AR9030T To test the servos i programmed a basic setup on the TX including a nice sequence for the two retract servos. Works like a charm. Couldn’t test the motor/controller combo since I had no time to solder the connectors. |
