Skystars S225/STX225 5s 5 Inch FPV Racer Kit Build/Review

EDIT 1/24/2019 Available here for only $109.99

Flight Controller PDF Manual/Pin Out Diagram Thanks to member GCRC

The new Skystars S225/STX225 DIY Kit is now available. Looks to me like it is going to be an excellent value in the 5 inch FPV racer category. Specs look really good, and I am liking that we are seeing more and more of these quads available in kit form.

My kit arrived a couple days ago, and I finally got a chance to snap a few pics. Hoping to get started on the build this afternoon, and will post more pics as I make progress.

EDIT-10/2/2018

Build is complete. Added a bunch more pics below. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions, or request pics of something I missed. Flight video coming soon. Also added some large zoomable images of the F405 AIO Flight Controller (FC) pinout to aid in wiring for anyone else doing this build. Some of the print on my board was pretty faint and the pics helped me locate the necessary solder pads.

For anyone looking to get started with this FPV drone on a tight budget, and get in the air for around $200 here is a shopping list that will get you in the air. You will want to add more batteries as your budget allows, but this will get you flying. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions. I am happy to assist. I personally use, or have used everything listed below. All of my flight videos with this drone are done with the kit and radio in the below shopping list.

Skystars STX225 Kit
Flysky FS-i6 Radio & Receiver
iMax B6 AC/DC Balance Charger
4S 14.8V 1300mah LiPo Battery

EDIT-10/3/2018

Managed a quick test flight today. Flies very smooth, and has a lot more punch, and speed than I was expecting, especially on 5042 high efficiency props. Should be really impressive on some 5152 props.

EDIT-11-13-2018 Spares are now showing up at Gearbest

Frames are available here for $21.44

Motors are available here for $8.24 each

ESC's are available here for $6.99

I will update if/when more show up.

EDIT-11/26/2018 Printed a shark fin for my Skystars STX225. Thing file here. Requires a quick easy mod to install. Front of the plate lines up perfectly, so install it with the stock screws and then you will see where to trim and drill the screw holes for the rear. See image below.

EDIT-11/28/2018 Got some new props to try out as soon as the weather permits. They're EyeSky 5053 and I hope they perform as good as they look. See pic below. Flight video hopefully coming in the next couple days.

EDIT-12/6/2018 Here is a link to some 3D printable landing gear designed for this quad. Special thanks to adis1313. If anyone here would like a set of this landing gear that doesn't have access to a 3D printer PM me, or post here and I will print you a set for actual cost.

EDIT-12/18/2018

Test flight running EyeSky 5053 Props. Good news. Motors were cool to the touch after a 3:30 flight.

Got mine today too! Frame's put together, so I plugged the fc to BF and it got 3.1.7 loaded on it! I don't know which fw to load as BF says it's OBSD board. Does it mean it's an Omnibus F4 board? There's no instructions anywhere for this frame/flight controller.

I've been browsing for more info on the FC too, and not coming up with anything. I would think that's probably what OBSD means, but can't say with any certainty. If I come across anything relevant to this specific FC I'll be sure to post it here. Please do the same if you find anything.

EDIT

Ok, it does indeed mean it's an OMNIBUSF4SD board. Still trying to find more info on it though.

Ready for its maiden flight. Indoor test hover went well. Now it just needs to stop raining.

Managed a quick test flight. Really impressed considering it's running 2204 motors, and 5042 props. Way faster, than I was expecting. Should really move out on some 5152 props. Video coming shortly.

Can someone post a connection diagram for the solder pads? I’m pretty sure where everything goes, but I really like to have documentation to follow. Don’t need to fry anything with stupidity!

Hi Mitchie I took some pictures of the FC and zoomed in on them in order to read some of the very faint print on the board. I will upload them ASAP. If there is a specific connection you are curious about just let me know.

Added some large images of the FC to the first post. Makes identifying the necessary connections easier for anyone that's doing this build.

Fastmax, what rx are you using? I’m having a hard time getting my rx working (newbish). I’m using a lemon rx and hoping you are too

Got the rx figured out and first hover complete. Now I'm not getting an image from the camera. I'm getting OSD info, which proves the vtx and OSD work, but just a black image. Did you have to do something special to get it to work? I'll try swapping the cam to see if that helps.
