Let's Those Kit Bash Projects

As a modeler, you can't help but collect parts. Over the years, with crashes and spare parts laying around you start to look at them and dream up what you could do with them. That's where kit bashing comes in. It involves taking parts from different planes and putting them together to make a new design. It can be loads of fun when done right and down right embarrassing when it doesn't work, but either way, you are having fun and putting old leftover spare parts to good use.

My favorite kit bash project was one I did probably 8 years ago or so. I was getting into 3D profile planes and had a couple of Magic fun fly planes and a Goldberg Extreme 330 profile 3D plane. I trashed the wing on the 330 leaving the fuselage in good shape and I had two sets of wings from the Magic so I got this crazy idea to make a 3D profile bi-plane out of those parts. I did and was amazed that it actually flew. It surprised me really, that it could hover, snap and fly so slowly. It was something I created out of parts I had just sitting around and that made it so much more fun for me. I wish I had photos of that thing, but I could not find any. These types of projects should be remembered so I wanted to reach out and see what the RCGroups community has been coming up with for kit bash projects. Please reply below and share your pics, videos and stories of any kit bash models you have created.

The main photo above is from Rory Tooley. He took an E-flite Whip It and added and EDF from the UMX Habu to create a ducted fan powered sailplane. Fun stuff!

this is my latest conversion, the wing of a Carl Goldberg MiG 27 military target practice drone , converted into a flying wing.
The full MiG-27 build would have implied a 3x heavier AUW, larger power plant etc, so this was a manageable project for me.

Maiden flight video:

Carl Goldberg Mig 27 Drone (2 min 32 sec)

this is a link to my blog:

Wingspan: 70 in . Wing Area: 5786 sq cm = 6.23 sq ft . Wing Loading: 8.2 oz/sq ft
AUW : 1400g = 49.8 oz.
Added coroplast vertical fin.
Hyperion HP-S3025-08 motor
Aeronaut CAM Carbon 12"x10" folding propeller.
50 A ESC with separate BEC.
3S 2200 mAh 40C battery.
Two Futaba 3003 standard analog 37 g servos for the elevons.

Veewind. A Seawind converted to EDF and V tail. This tail didn't work that well. New tail works much better.

Twin Terry

I always loved the Graupner Terry from back in the day, but it looked a lot faster than it was. I recently fixed that by converting my Terry to a twin. I designed up a pair of motor mounts and speed controller holders for the wings and added a nose plug. She flies awesome on a 3s1p 2200mah pack. With the addition of ailerons she now rolls like a champ and tracks beautifully.

If anyone wants to make one I can share the STL files if you have access to a 3D printer

Okay here we go.

A kit Stick I got about 4 years ago. My wife cut out the crosses, I picked out the colors. Cheap value hobby motor, left over hitec servoes, esc from a su-26 eflight 30 amp and a cheap 6 chan, spectrum receiver, wish I would have had a 4 chan, but left over parts. Over 60 flights, the plane is a joy to fly and many thumbs up at our Mitchell rc club. it's fun!!!!

Can't take all the credit on this one, I'm bashing an already heavily bashed vintage Telemaster. Trying to work through some final details before maidening. Hoping for a glider tug, and 2 possibly 3 drop box capacity.

This is a kit-bash by a club member. He took an old Astro Hog and and threw some Zero-looking paint, canopy, etc., on it and we dubbed it the Hogakazi. I apologize for the poor video quality (by today's standards, anyway), but this was shot 7+ years ago.

Hogakazi! (2 min 34 sec)
