Douglas LeRoy, Event Manager:

The Holly Springs Skyhawks Radio Control Group (AMA #5291) hosted their second annual charity event, Wings Over Springs Electric Fly In and SWAP Meet, on Saturday, September 1, 2018. Sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics (#18/655), this annual event is their charity fundraiser for Meg’s Smile Foundation (www.megsmile.org). Proceeds also benefit the Holly Springs Parks and Rec Department which provides the club a home flying site area within the park system.

Labor Day weekend weather in North Carolina can be a crapshoot: while you don’t know what you’ll get, you do know it will often be extreme. Whether it’s an impending hurricane (not this year), or unseasonably cool/low humidity (nope, that was the previous weekend), or steamy hot, muggy, and plain miserable outside (yep, nailed it)! That said, the show must go on and rain or shine Wings Over Springs 2018 and SWAP meet was on!

Club members arrived at 0630 finish final setup of tables, tents, and sound system for the day. Boy Scout volunteers from Holly Springs Troop xxx were positioned to direct pilot traffic to the flying site within the Jefferson L. Sugg Farm Park. Pilot only raffle prizes were set up (twenty-one prize packages in all) and the check-in desk was readied.

While the Skyhawks are an all-electric club with a small home field, they host this event on a 20+ acre event field that is perfectly suited for models up to ˝ scale. Participants began arriving about 0800 and the flight line began to fill out. Though this event was billed as an electric fly-in, all model types were authorized and welcome to fly at this event (except gas turbines). This option afforded a good variety of models and attracted modelers from all the surrounding area clubs. Colors and the pilots’ meeting at 1000 started the day.

An enhancement for 2018 was a newly designed dedicated drone race course sponsored by Hangar 18 Hobbies in Cary, NC. While a good bit of the day was spent interacting with spectators and educating them on various aspects of this sport, the day concluded with a MultiGP race competition with awards and prizes for the winners.

Noontime demos opened with a full-scale flyover by the Bandit Flight Team from Raleigh, NC. This was really a crowd pleaser! The demos were entertaining and featured a good variety of aircraft and funny skits. Demos concluded with the spectacular and skillful flying of Rick Cawley’s ⅓ Scale Jungmeister biplane. Smoke on!

All in all, it was a wonderful day of flying, public entertainment, and a chance to meet new friends in the hobby. Storms cut the day a bit short and the event concluded at 4 pm. The club will definitely be hosting this event in 2019 so watch the sanctioned event calendar and make your plans to attend! Best wishes and safe flying.
