3D Printing Pot Hole Repairing Drone???

Can drones be used to repair pot holes in roads with a 3D printer attached? Watch this video to find out.

Concept Drone for Repairing Roads

The future is drones and using them to integrate into daily life as smart homes and technology turn into smart cities. Drones will one day be used for all sorts of civil duties. Researchers at the University of Leeds have developed a drone that could one day be used to autonomously repair pot holes in roadways.

It sounds far fetched, but the concept drone they created is functional. They essentially took a DJI M600 and attached a Delta style 3D printer to the bottom. That allows it to take off, fly to a location, land and start printing repair material right on the the spot. It takes some of our favorite things in drones and 3D printers and combines them into something that looks straight out of a futuristic sci-fi movie. What will they think of next?

Yea, what will they think of next? Probably package delivery right to your door step.

It would never work in pennsylvania and parts of ohio and west virginia.
They'd need a drone the size of a C-5 Galaxy just to fix a little stretch of highway..

Otherwise this sounds like someone found a way to get their hands in the government cookie jar.

I kill batteries!
Based on the video the material being extruded is pushed through maybe a 0.8 nozzle. Maybe 3mm filament diameter.

The printer is still limited to an area it can reach. The drone would have to move and reset to cover a larger hole layer by layer.

Not even accounting the filament required, the power required to run the printer and the drone and still have it fly "home".

You might as well transport the drone to the location and by that time you could have already patched a good amount of potholes while that drone tries to finish one.

Nice to see people trying to use technology in different ways....but having said that; I am quite sure that the plastics from the printer will NOT stick to any pavement (bituminous or concrete) for no longer than the first big vehicle bouncing over it. Now if the drone could drop in some hot mix (but that will need to be compacted) or fast curing concrete this could be useful for high traffic areas.
Keep thinking

Man...why do they keep publishing articles on final year uni projects.......

Its the night before this project is due...'what do we have laying around....uh a rostock printer and an octocopter......okay it'll have to do......'

Why didn’t their academic advisor ask them what problem are they going to solve?

I know a lot of people think this is where innovation begins, not by developing a solution in search of a problem. They didn’t have to build that prototype to know that it wouldn’t work. They bolted a 3D printer onto a drone, that counts for innovation?

Intellectual bushwa. Fix a hole up on a rooftop not a hole down on the ground, Poindexter.
