Esprit - Element 3.5E F5J/ALES Electric Sailplane (ARF)

Here is a new sailplane option for Limited Motor Run or Altitude Limited Electric Soaring from Espirt!

Excellent competition level F5J/LMR or ALES Slectric Sailplane

From Esprit...

One of the most impressive European made sailplanes that we have ever seen. The brand new competition F5J/ALES Element 3.5E flies as good as it looks. Gentle, smooth, and very long flights are the standards for this beauty. The careful use of composites with competition balsa, creates a good light structure that will hold its shape for a long time. The synergy of low weight and strong structure is very unusual in a production sailplane and can only be achieved with careful attention to design and construction. The entire model is constructed using free-flight techniques. Top Model uses the latest construction techniques such as CNC milling and laser cutting. The wings as well as horizontal and vertical tail parts are all classic balsa with Carbon Fiber main spare and leading edge design. The fuselage is gel-coated fiberglass with white finish and CF canopy. Whole model is covered with Ultracote. All control surfaces are hinged with adhesive tape. This fully built sailplane needs only basic assembly and motor/radio installation. The 3-piece wing and full flying stabilizer are each easily removable for transport and storage. Each part is carefully hand-crafted with meticulous attention to detail. Value is simply incredible.

  • Wingspan:137.75" (3500mm)
  • Length:71" (1800mm)
  • Weight:4.75-5 lbs. (2155-2300g)
  • Good: AXi 46/760, 15x8 folding
  • Better: Race 2014/5100 6.7:1, 16x8 folding
  • 3300 3S
  • 40mm spinner

Special Features:

  • Control Surfaces: Ailerons, Elevator, Rudder and FlapsTight covering, with all seams hand-sealed
  • Elegant gel-coated white fiberglass fuselage w/CF canopy
  • Three-pieces wing with ailerons and oversized flaps
  • Ready-built Balsa/Carbon Fiber 3-piece wing design
  • Ultracote covered wings and tail parts
  • Includes all necessary hardware
  • Virtually perfect, extremely clean and well made

Umm, 2008 called and they want their LMR ships back?

It's a nice price for a Full house electric ARF, but it seems to be optimized for a category of competition that expired years ago, specifically LMR.

At 2.1-2.3Kg, it's quite heavy compared to either the low-dollar Balsa kits (like the 2.9m Hoellein Inside F5J @1.1Kg) or the higher-end molded F5J ships (at anywhere from 1.1Kg-1.5Kg), requires a more expensive power system (specifically a monster ESC, with a 70A spec'd, and a huge 3S 3300 battery compared to the typical 3S 850-1300mAh now in common use).

For not much more you can get into something like a K3600 which will use a much less expensive power system and build up much lighter. Fully-built, a K3600 should be just about the same price (what you pay extra on the airframe will be saved in ESC & batteries)

Still circling in sink...
TopModel seems to overstate their weights. it should build out lighter. But even if it builds out at 1.7 or 1.8 kg, it's going to be a bit on the heavy side.

If it's a half kilo difference, that's a huge deal in terms of what you need in power system and how competitive it is. At the listed weight, I wouldn't even look at it (especially since the slightly lighter Samsara can be had for 2/3rds the cost), but at 1.8Kg and $175 cheaper than a K3600, it's a bit of a different set of tradeoffs. I'd still probably take the K3600, but there would be a definite argument in favour of the cheaper choice.

What's the actual balance location from someone flying this model? My calculations show it going to be about 1" further back than what the plans call for.

Finished helping a friend build this model and also get a bunch of flights in with it.

First the changes that a user should consider. The recommended balance point on the plans is 75-85mm aft of the wings root leading edge. Actual balance location was 117mm! That’s not even close. For the non-metric folks that means we moved the balance location 1.26 inches further aft of the suggested aft location! Just looking at the model and pointing to a location that looked right was closer than the plans. I used the Sailplane Calc Spreadsheet from Tailwind Gliders.

During the build we broke out one aileron and one flap horn. We thought maybe we just didn’t get a good glue joint so we glued them back in and went flying. Well we already tore out one flap horn. So we’ll make a larger area horn that gets glued into the flap and that should fix that.

Now the good. We ended up at 69oz and she really flies nice! I have flown several other models of similar building construction and really can say this one flies real nice, I would recommend it over the others. All the components are as suggested from Esprit. The wing bags are nice too.

I had one and flew it all summer , I have to say it is the nicest flying ARF e glider I have ever flown.
The build quality is excellent plus , with very few issues reported and none on my part .
For those looking to get into a really sweet flying ship above and beyond your 2 / 2.5m without spending a fortune on a composite ship , this is a great choice ! If I had one thing to say after every flight it would be .. " WOW ! , This thing is just incredible..i love it!"
For those that want a ship they could fly competitions with and win , but are not necessarily going to ..they just want that level of performance , I couldn't recomend a better ship.
Sure , what wins on Sunday sells on Monday , but I have seen a few foam Radians crush the big buck ships ..more than once. At the current price I would call it a real smart pick.
