The site: The Santa Margarita Ranch is a historic 3600 acre commercial ranch hosting weddings, horse activities, an annual 5000 people food and wine tasting, ZipLine rides(over vineyards) and now again, glider contests... The place is huge. Google: www.historicsantamargaritaranch.com. This is a good central location for pilots from both Norcal and SoCal and Central Valley and out of state to meet in a great venue.

The January low is 31. Sperling's comfort index for Santa Margarita (zip 93453) is 83 out of 100, where a higher score indicates a more comfortable year-around climate. The contests will be scored as follows: F3J with live updates on Jim Monacos’ on line system on the F3xevents.com website with F5J scored live using Gliderscore at Gliderscore.com.

I hope you can make it to this fourth annual F3JNational Tour event and second annual F5J USA Tour event.

NOTE THIS CHANGE TO THE FORMAT AND CONTEST DATES: I think our idea of a three day mixed contest was a good idea that isn't going to work out. So we will be changing it to two two day contests:
F5J will be on Saturday and Sunday October 27/28.
F3J will be on Saturday and Sunday November 17/18.
F3J tour events require 16 registered pilot sign up by two weeks in advance the the contest(November 3). If we don' get 16 signed up the that date contest will be still be held but it won't be an official National Tour event.

Come and enjoy flying at the Santa Margarita Ranch

We are going to be able to survey pilots that might be wanting to fly F,3J next week end at Visalia so we'll know enough to be able to make a decision then. I think it's more than likely the F5J contest will be the only contest and will take place Saturday and Sunday.

Change to contest dates

Since the format to combine F5J with F3J back to back to save resources is not working out, the contest is now changed to a two day for F5J only held on Saturday and Sunday October 27/28. The F3J contest is postponed to Saturday and Sunday November 17/18 as a two day contest so that those of us interested in that format can make a weekend contest. So if you signed up for F3J at F3Xevents your entry will be carried to the new dates. All other announcements for the combined contest hold for the two contest dates. The field will be open for flying for both contests the Thursday and Friday before each contest. So sign up on F3Xevents.com and come and enjoy the central coast and Santa Margarita Ranch.

DIRECTIONS to the field:
From the north traveling on Hwy 101, take the Santa Margarita exit ( about 8 miles south of Atascadero) proceed to and pass thru Santa Margarita. Proceed 1/2 mile past town to field gate on the left(there will be a sign and you will see the site)
From the south traveling on Hwy 101 take the Santa Margarita exit( about 12 miles north of San Luis Obispo) proceed as above.

The weather forcast looks ideal. Flying conditions yesterday were excellent.
See next weekend.

Be sure to go through town to the field gate; don't take the Yerba Buena St entrance.

Had a fun time at F5J Contest in Santa Margarita, CA this weekend. It was held at a cattle ranch, which was historically a stagecoach. Really a neat place and great company. Thanks to Rick and the SLO Crew!

I just updated the Tour standings with the Santa Margarita results. Check them out on the F5J-USA website here as well as in a horizontally scrollable version here.

I had a blast. Santa Margarita is a trip to fly at: flat fields, clusters of trees here and there, small and big rolling hills, and buildings and roads in town way to the SSE that was the most consistent source of lift many of us found all weekend. You just had to be willing go long and hope you had enough altitude to get back and land in time. My light Explorer worked great right up to the last 2 rounds in the flyoffs when the breezes picked up--I should have switched planes

The SloFlyers club members put on a great event. Rick Johnston gets a big thumbs up for organizing this one and thanks Tim Johnson for stepping up to help CD and keep score. And thanks to my timers Frank Campbell and Steve Willison--you guys doubled the fun I had. Can't wait to come back.

Chris
