Build Log

AM-40-2 Aldo Montanari OZnoP

I will be building this plane https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_files_0...-40_oz3883.pdf
It will be 138." It is bigger than anything I've built yet, so this should be interesting. I have a Mccoy .35 "Redhead" that I want to use, as I have never flown a internal combustion-driven plane.
I will begin building on the 12th of August. I just wanted to start the thread now, as I will be fixing/testing the engine and wanted to post the process of that as well.

That is going to be SOOOOO pretty! ! !

Something you may want to consider is slightly increasing the dihedral. With it as it sits it'll fly just fine. But my spidey senses are whispering to me that it'll be a touch lazy to turn into the high wing when lift tilts the model and you want to smartly turn into the high wing to catch the thermal.

One way to get a touch more dihedral without ruining the look is to make up a building table with a swept up wing tip section that is just curved enough that the top of the wing is straight and the bottom sweeps up to the tip. As opposed to what it is now where the top arches down to the bottom surface in the taper of the tip.

But even with that I'd still sneak in another 25mm's per side to the dihedral.

It might get some form of roll control. Like air brakes on the underside of the wing that have flaperon control.

Hacked out a bunch of ribs. I need to get some 1.5, 2 and 3mm plywood somewhere. My LHS has none.
Engine is almost ready for testing.

Won't 1/16" (1.6mm), 3/32" (2.4mm) & 1/8" (3.2mm) do????

Yup, but my LHS has neither (x)mm plywood or the closest imperial approximations. No plywood at all. What they have is what midwest carries.

That's going to be a beautiful looking plane when built!

It might be worth seeing if you can mail order a quantity of plywood in the common sizes to hold yourself? I try and keep good stocks of ply, balsa, piano wire brass tube etc and then top up when I visit the shows. It gives a nice fuzzy feeling knowing that you have enough materials to build lots of planes - just incase they ever ration balsa wood!!

I'll second that. I used to live in that neck of the woods and found them to be great people!
