Warbirds Over Mobile in Review 2018

A big thank you to Fritz for this great event review!

Azalea City Model Aeronautics' "Warbirds Over Mobile"

Here is an event review from our site FlyingGiants.com...

From Fritz:

July 21, 2018. Mobile, Alabama It was a sunny, pleasant day, with little wind. 13 pilots signed the register, including two from Mississippi.

A variety of warbirds showed up, ranging from a vintage 1912 Sommer Monoplane to a modern-day Russian Sukhoi Su-27 turbine jet. Several turbines, some gasoline, several electric, and only a couple of nitro powered aircraft were represented in the mix. The two showstoppers were Bill Culbeson's beautiful Sukhoi Su-27, and Vernon Montgomery's huge F-86 Super Sabre.

The registered pilots voted on all the warbirds. They awarded "Best Vintage Warbird" to Ed Callen's Stearman biplane. Ray Murtha's Monoplane came in second. And Vernon Montgomery won "Best Scale Aircraft" for his awesome F-86. Bill Culberson's Su-27 was runner-up.

Thanks to the following sponsors who donated RC items to our event: Master Airscrew sent us seven nice, large propellers; SIG Mfg. donated a 25% discount certificate; and RTL Fasteners sent a bunch of small, assorted screws. We raffled off gift cards from local hobby store HobbyTown USA, which gives the club a nice discount.

FWIW, while the F-86 may be super size, it is just a "Sabre" or "Sabrejet". The F-100 was the "Super Sabre".

Hello, Tango Juliet. My Grandfather worked @North American Aviation @LAX from ‘47-‘81. He got on board as a flight-line electrical continuity checker, because he could work an ammeter faster than I can fart. Just as they were introducing the F-86 “Alpha” Models. You’re right, it’s the Sabre or Sabre Jet. Anyhow, that sure is a BEAUTIFUL flying field, there in Mobile, Alabama. Go Bama!!! Roll Tide!!!
