OZNoP - Outerzone No Picture Build 2018

GENTLEMEN! START YOUR ENGINES! ! ! !

The OZNoP theme build is now Officially Underway!

You have until 1159 hrs on Dec 31 to finish one or more models and qualify for the prize draw by having completed your model.

And what is the prize draw this time. I'M GLAD YOU ASKED!

Steve85, a member here on RCGroups runs a laser cutting service up here in Canada called Summit Model Aeronautics. Steve has graciously offerred a prize of $100 worth of laser cutting from plans you supply. It won't help you for THIS build but it will certainly make your NEXT build a whole lot easier!

So to all of you that are down to "just" a dozen or so plans it's time to start making a selection, get registered on the Builder's List by replying to this thread with your intentions and to start BUILDING ! ! !

_________________________________

Announcing the second Build for 2018. The Outerzone No Picture Build. Or OZNoP for short.

As per the last Build this will be the thread to announce your intentions and to inform me of when you start a "build log" thread. And as before I'll maintain a Builder's List with links to the separate Build Logs.

The OZNoP Build officially starts at 0001 on Aug 1 2018 and will run to Midnight Dec 31.

The eligible designs are those found on Outerzone with no picture given on the plan detail page and dated prior to 1970.

Steve has been nice enough to provide us with a couple of options for finding plans that qualify.

First is a search that brings up name and detail lines in a manner similar to the general browsing method. Click on the "Date up to 1970" link.

https://outerzone.co.uk/search/custo...hoto/index.asp

Next is to use the tag page which provides us with an array of thumbnail views so we can see what we are picking. You'll need to select the middle squares for the tag selections then click on 1970 then click on the "no pics" link at the far upper right of the page. Total plans found should be 752.

https://outerzone.co.uk/advanced/sea...cale&Setting=2

The 1970 cutoff keeps us within the usual idea that "vintage" starts at around 50 years back from where we are. I hope that gives all of us lots of options to play with. I know that I found an easy dozen plans that I like.

As before multiple builds are not only allowed but encouraged. And you can jump in at any time before the end if you think you can get the model done in time.

Here you are, Bruce, to start you off...

Curtiss Condor Biplane Airliner, a 1935 plan, to be built at 200% (1m22 span...) and converted from static to electric power and (probably...) RET control. Build Log has been started here ...

OZNoP 2018, 1935 Curtiss Condor ....

Shame on you Douglas, going for the easy option! Now if you wanted a REALLY difficult twin engine biplane, what about this? https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=4303

So I'M meant to be in control?

Not enough time for me, I'm afraid - plus I have the Ace to finish, and two or three 'repair & fettlings' to do.

Having said that, I have just found that a certain plan which I have been contemplating and cogitating over anyway is on the 'no pictures list'......

I love Towner plans to look at - they are almost art. But the one time I really looked at one with a view to interpreting what it was saying (the P39 when I was designing mine) I found it very difficult to actually understand what it was showing.

I presume that you are aware of the possibility of proposing multiple entries..? Be wary of what you wish for..!

...

...

Nah; just joshin', of course. I had considered the Tri-motor, though. It was the corrugations that didn't please Our Eldest, so I chose the Condor instead. I'll leave the Heyford for when I'm old.

I'm very tempted by this one - I remember reading Pierre Clostermann's book "The Big Show" back when I was, maybe 17 or so https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5461

[edit] ...or more realistically, maybe a Hurst Bowers Curtiss Robin https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=835 I do have a history of starting builds that never get finished, when I run out of steam. The Robin has nice flat sides

A note about the OZ search... after the search returning the tabular list finishes, one can scroll to the bottom and change the display from "Text Only" to "Thumbnails" , and increase the number of results on the page.

Trouble carrying through eh? May I suggest THIS ONE in that case?

Sounds like you're still on the fence model wise. So I'll let you decide first. But I'll put your name down on the FAR less coveted second position as a place holder.

I'm in.

After much angst and soul searching I dropped the Hatchet and the Miss Delaware and went in a completely different direction. The Miss Delaware was let go because I’m up to my belt line in oldtimers right now and don't need another 6 foot model as a hanger queen. The Hatchet is a niche model and I'm afraid after the first few flights the novelty will wear off and it too will sit.
Also I'm still inching along with my 2018 CAP and the Leapin Lena. (on the plus side, this activity saves me much $$ from psychiatrist fees.)

So I'm choosing the Binatang, something different for me. It's a small model that can be thrown in the trunk (boot) and needs little support equipment. Also if It is finished quickly that leaves time for another model.

Here it is.

You wont hear much from me until the plans arrive and I start a build log, but I'll be gathering some balsa and other odds and ends till then..

Nice one A52 - an Aussie model, our friends from down under will be pleased. I built another of his designs, the pseudo Albatross "Chameleon" biplane for rudder only with a rubber driven escapement back in the day, flew nicely.

Thanks SD, I didn't realize it was from down under, thought it came from the Colonel's neck of the woods.

I'm looking at the Wicko Wizard for free flight:

https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=10066

However, I'm going to build the Wanner's Wedell-Williams racer (https://outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=364, which unfortunately doesn't qualify because it has a picture) to fly at the FAC Outdoor Champs the end of September, so the Wicko will have to wait a bit...

Aeronca52 and MKellyvich your names are on the list. A52, let me know if this is stock size and if radio controlled or not.

Mike, you mentioned "free flight" so I'm assuming stock size and rubber power. Let me know if this is not the case.
