Build Log

Aero L-39 Albatros 80mm EDF by Freewing

This thread is about the new Freewing L-39 Aero Albatros.

This thread in German :

and Italian :

https://translate.google.com/transla...100&edit-text=

I always liked the L-39, a very nice flier if built light and goes pretty fast with little power.

Freewing Model China web site (not the fake freewingmodel one) :

http://sz-freewing.com

http://sz-freewing.com/productlist.aspx?t1=2&t2=25

The wingspan on the original is 9.46m vs 1.053 for the model, and length 12.13m vs 1.351m for the model, that gives a scale on 8.98:1 or very close to 9-th scale,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aero_L-39_Albatros

A number of well known model makers (Savex, Schreiner, C&C etc) had/have some beautiful molded edf L-36s, and HTG had a nice one too (from which JePe took over the molds).

Here's again some details on the original(s) :

Interestingly enough, opening of the new Freewing European warehouse would perhaps suggest an infusion of more Euro-popular 80mm edf jets such as L-39 & MiG-15 - as opposed to that endless string of F-xxx and A-xxx ...

I heard the new Freewing edf Jet is called "Project Foil" which most seem to associate with kitchen aluminum foil, daggers or toe nail clippers, but perhaps here as in Foil an Aggressor (see TG Aggressor Squadron) , pics below :

I was told another hint was cloud atlas, as in the Atlas Air guy killed in 2001 in an Aero L-39 :

Savex make a nice 90mm edf L-39 ... One of the best molded edf kits ever made ... Not the hobbyking heavy polyester stuff that looked good but flew heavy.

The Savex L-39 was a composite masterpiece in its time; when I was getting ready to fly my Savex L-39 with a Jetcat in it they closed the local field to turbines

Incidentally there were/are two same sized almost identical L-39 90mm EDF fully molded kits, the Savex

http://www.savex.cz/prod.php?lang=en&id=200

and the Schreiner one:

http://modellbau-peters.de/schreiner...-lackiert.html

Originally it was just one company, Schreiner & Savex.

make turbine L-39's as well.

And Composite Arf makes a big one :

Some might not like the Aero L-39, but some do ... Here's what a bigger turbine L-39 flies like

For the L-39 there is no lack of colorful schemes, my CMP one had a nice camo job but was a bit on the heavy side

https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...L-59%29&pp=100

At some point I just retired it as would never fly it because of the weight, just took the fun out of it.

I do have a slight preference for some russian and czeck camo schemes, look a bit more aggressive to me, and I do like the Breitling scheme as well.

At some point Freewing did produce a nice small styrofoam Aero L-39 in 64mm edf format :

http://www.rc-castle.com/index.php?r...10&search=L-39

http://www.rcmf.co.uk/4um/rc-chatter...l39-albatross/

http://www.rc-network.de/forum/showt...-gesucht/page2

I never had that one ... a bit too small for my taste.

Nevertheless that choice would suggest the possibility that they might re-edit the L-39 in a larger (ie 80mm edf ) format

Flyzone also made one in the same size more or less (56mm edf) :

The L-39 is a beautiful plane, looks like it would fly like a sport jet but has military history too. I hope FreeWing is working on an 80mm version also...

I do like the silver metallic (bare polished aluminum) on the L-39 too, but it might end up a lot of work on top of the Freewing EPO finish...
