So this week saw the first engine starts of the NGH 38 FS and taxi trials. After the first runs there was the usual list of mods needed. Pretty standard for any big model build. Next runs made with the blades on to check if the head would take the load and that the blades would spin up. Pleased to report that the solid Tulip wood blades spun up and had a nice whooshing sound as they came up to speed. However.....the motor/prop comb was not giving anywhere near enough thrust and the undercarriage was too soft.
Next day, after a long night in the mancave. We tried again with a different prop, no spats and a beefed up undercarriage, and got the first true hop. Sadly I have to report that the usual over confidence took over and a small hop turned very quickly into a big hop and as the instruction was ďif it gets too high donít go for a circuit or a turn just land it ď, thatís what was done, into the standing crop of barley, 3 foot off the patch, nosed over and one of those monster blades took the tail assy clean off in front of the stab and spun the model round 180 degrees. All that energy had to go somewhere. Not terminal but it wonít be at OW this weekend.

Thankfully the small DAG didnít need any repairs........yet. Have to say it was a great day. Lost count of the questions from JP re 3 blade v 2 blade, pusher v tractor. How did I get promoted to PR Officer?

After the small matter of the blade chopping through the fuz, the rebuild and recover is now complete. Also modifications to the carb intake which is now ducted to the interior of the fuz behind the firewall. This means that there is no change to the engine tune cowl on or off. This was done using parts scavenged from an old Quadra and vehicle silicone heating pipe. Another benefit of this is that the intake roar is much reduced so the overall Lisa levels are now down to around 84 db. We visited the patch and carried out some further taxi trials and to test the blade spin up in a 18 mph wind. Conclusions are that the tail wheel still needs work to keep it tracking, ground handling is not great, maybe a car steering Gyro? Blades are awesome, scary to be near. Nearly set for a proper test flight but it will need to be a bigger patch and the right wind.
