WLtoys WL912 RC Boat

Hello,

A few days ago i got the WLTOYS WL912 RC Boat from Gearbest. The boat looks pretty good and works on 2.4ghz with a 390 brushed motor and 7.2v Li-Pe battery. With this setup it is supposed to reach 25km and with a proper Li-Po around 30km.

The transmitter is pretty basic and works on 4 AA batteries with a range of about 100m. The boat comes ready to run with everything you need including battery and charger.

What is unusual about the boat is that it is using a gear system to provide power to the prop shaft. The motor pinion is made out of brass but sadly the gear attached to the prop shaft is plastic.

Here are some quick photos of the box and boat:

After testing the boat in its original state i plan to find a way to upgrade it to a brushless setup on 3s, the only problem in doing so is the plastic gear on the prop shaft.

If the upgrade is successful i plan to mod it to 5Ghz FPV, so i guess i need so buy some plastidip to protect the camera.

An unboxing video will soon follow

Also i know that some of you guys are buying boats like the WL912 and mod them for fishing this may no longer be necessary because there is a ready made product for this purpose:

Update:

I ran the boat today with a 2000mah lipo and i had to modify the tray to make it fit.

On the 1st run i crashed into a drifting piece of bamboo and broke the propeller. Luckily i was able to replace it cheaply at the local hobby shop.

So i went out again to try the boat and it lasted 2 more 2000mah packs and when i tried to use the original 1500mah battery the plastic gear stripped

Also the boat is heavier on the left side since the battery installed dead center. So i added some silly putty as counter weight to level the boat.

With the boat leveled the auto flip function when the boat is upside down does not work. The boat has to be heavier on the left for auto leveling to work.

The ESC and motor worked fine with no sign of overheating, the speed was enough to make the boat interesting.

Now i have to repair, upgrade the boat get rid of the plastic gear and use direct drive.

Here are some action shots :

You might try fitting drive line parts from an FT012, but it will take some creativity figuring how to fit the motor mount.

Parts cheap here: https://www.banggood.com/search/ft012.html

Some pics of the set-up:

I modded one of these FT012 hulls once. I had to fit a bottom-mounted water-cooled motor mount, and did so by making a 1/8" plywood floor first and coating the wood with waterproof sealer. You can see how I did it in the pics below.

This was for a flex shaft conversion, but the same can be done with the FT012's solid driveline.

The water-cooled mount for an outrunner motor came from Atomik RC:

There are lots of boats that are similar to the WL912 but you are right the FT seems to be the closest match. Your photos are helpful.

Can you please recommend parts with links for the conversion ?

* Motor
* Shaft
* How to attach the shaft on the motor ?
* Which prop should i use ? ( Bigger, small for 3s )
* Can i run a flex shaft on the existing shaft tube of the WL912 or that has to be removed as well ( its not curved, its all straight ) ?

Hello once again guys.

I am slowing thinking of returning to my RC activities after about 1 year due to moving to another place.

The WL912 is still waiting for donor parts . The FT012 looks OK but i don't really like the fact that its not direct drive and needs a small dogbone to drive the propeller.

I would like to use parts from the Volantex 792-4 so i make this boat somewhat compatible with the Volantex that i already have.

I can find all the parts needed except the plastic black motor mount and the motor itself. Anyone knows where i can find the plastic motor mount ?

Any other ideas on how to revive the boat ? It would be nice to have it running this summer so i am trying to plan ahead.

Thanks

Hello,

Now that i have finished modding/repairing my 2 Remo Smax based cars the Remo Hi-Rider and the Kyosho Smax i would like to revive this project again. This boat needs to be back in the water.

AirDOGGe can you please post links with the hardware you used on your boat?

I have decided that the easiest way to get this boat operational again in to mod it into an airboat keeping the original water rudder.

I wanna use the motor/mount from the volantex ranger 757-4 running on 3s mounted where the rear wing is. Do you guys think this is a good idea ?
