Last month the LEGO World Expo took place in Copenhagen, Denmark. There was one exhibit that was especially interesting for RCGroups users and drone enthusiasts who attended. Human Media Lab from Queen's University in Canada partnered with the LEGO Group's Creative Play Lab to create an interactive drone experience. Kids could lay out a shape of LEGO bricks and then a fleet of drones would take off and mimic the shape and colors of what was built. The LEGO blocks were built on a special controller that has gyro's and other sensors and it would track the child's movement and control the drones accordingly. How cool is that! You could build out a shape and watch it come to life in the air and then have the ability to alter and move it in real time.

Tom Donaldson, the VP of Creative Play Lab said "At the LEGO Group, we continuously explore the opportunities offered by new technologies to create fun and creative experiences for children. We are happy to offer the visitors at LEGO World the chance to experiment with LEGO bricks and drones in collaboration with Queen’s Human Media Lab. While the technology is a playful experiment, and not a real LEGO product, it is a way for us to explore the boundaries of what can be done with a combination of technology, LEGO bricks and loads of playful imagination.”

While this was just a demo, it does represent an incredible use of drone technology for interactive learning. The future of drones is very bright and we are excited to see where it will go next.

Now that was cool!

I do wonder though if smaller children use them how durable they will be. Legos themselves are pretty sturdy, but with the electronics involved I would worry about them breaking.
