Illinois Steel Mill Comeback

A now closed-down Illinois steel mill announces that the Trump steel tariff will allow hiring 500 workers.
They will re-open!
Only 2% of steel coming DIRECTLY from China to USA, is being bandied about.
However..., more Chinese steel is coming from other countries, including Canada..., they serving only as a middleman.
Gary Cohn, who is leaving the White House, is a Democrat who favored a "Carbon Tax!
Cohn never should have served under Trump and his agenda to begin with.
Cohn continued to serve the Democrat Party and NOT Trump's agenda...

Someone on these Forums (a steel worker) stated that the largest US steel mill is foreign owned.
Can't recall his "Handle," or the mill's name. The mill's name was cited.
Normally I would be against tariffs..., but China is systematically trying to strip America of its' industrial might.

China's intent to undercut the world in prices.
This through subsistance wages, no equivalent to Social Security, lack of worker's rights, etc.
China intent is beyond transparent.
They don't even have to totally hide what they are doing!
Before Trump, America was merely rolling over towards the so-called, "inevitable" New World Order...
Some in Europe are only just starting to wake up to Trump's vision and leadership.
Winning.

A middleman is an incurred cost. It might be just enough to make it worthwhile to produce domestically.

Alexander Hamilton imposed tariffs on imported goods to kick off the making of products domestically.

So where is Trump exactly on these tariffs, is he on the side of blue collar workers for votes or is he really on the side of business and Wall Street investors? Trump doesn’t hire Americans as workers, he hires cheaper foreign labor, is he pulling another scam?

This mill will only employ 500 workers.

And btw, they could have already opened it if they wanted. Based on the steel and scrap prices today, they would make $252,000,000 a year in gross profit running at 75% capacity.

The steel execs have scammed the president of the US, and the American people.

This isn't 1785

We already have a process to tariff unfairly traded goods.

This tariff was done as a sham under the guise of "national security" to end run congress. Note how the national security angle is hardly mentioned anymore? It is because that was never the true driver. Hooking up the mill executives was.

Democrats are the ones pushing this tariff. All of the Republicans in congress are against it.

China isn't a "middleman" for chinese steel. Trump doesn't know what he is talking about when he brings up "trans-shipping". When it does happen, it is easy to find out, and we already have trade remedies in place to address it. He is also talking nonsense about "illegally dumped steel". You can't bring in steel that has a dumping margin on it without paying that tax. There are too many parties involved to get away with something like that.

Btw, China can't just send steel to Canada, and then send it into the US. The original tariff applied to that Chinese product would still apply and have to be paid. The ONLY way to do that is if the material is "value added", which this tariff doesn't cover anyway.

China has been systematically decreasing steel production actually.

These tariffs won't hurt China AT ALL. That is very clear.

The "new world order" is already here. We have and deal with a global economy. Using draconian trade measures to fight that and bring back some bygone era wont' do anything but hurt Americans.

You do understand that the only reason US steel mills got so big in the 50s and 60s is because the rest of the worlds industrial base was destroyed, right? That, combined with poor business decisions and a refusal to modernized, put some out of business.

You do realize that steel mill companies are sitting on record profits right now, right? They aren't hurting.

Tariffs are for losers, seriously. If one sector of your industry can't compete for whatever reason, let it down gently. Don't let it crash.

But imposing tariffs on steel based upon the fabricated reason that they are strategically important enough to prevent ourselves from becoming dependent on foreign sources. That just doesn't cut it as a reason. If we entered into a war, we could ramp up steel production very quickly, just like before.

In fact, we should be import as much foreign steel as a policy to save up our own domestic supply of the raw materials needed to make steel in case we become isolated from the foreign supply.

I'd also like to read the study they are required to undertake by law in order to declare such a case for nationalizing (which is what you effectively do with such tariffs) steel production. I'm not sure what else such price controls over a commodity should be called, but it's not free market capitalism, that's for sure.

Donald Trump is an economic disaster unfolding before our very eyes.

Funny republicans, they do not want government involvement in virtually anything! Yet they cheer about an import tax that will hurt every American wallet!
I guess that is what you get when you worship a president as if he is the messiah...

Only 500 new jobs? How sad. I feel bad for the 500 people getting new jobs don't you?
