DH2 1:12 scale version of Mike Roach's plan
Always intrigued by the 'interesting' configuration of a DH2. ..and with Mikes' generously provided plan.. thought I'd build this one.
Steve 85 cnc'd me a Short kit at 1:12th (reduced scale...28+") Which even at that size will strain my hanger TBH. Photo of all the cut bits, which are Nicely done and the provided parts index sheet which is Brilliant None of the burning sometimes found in Laser bits, Nor the use of Too light balsa... grr. Wood choices are what I would have made. Thanx Steve. Just Realised I forgot to photo 4 more sheets of bits .. yet more ribs. Gonna give my wee EDF project a rest and simply 'build' this one. Von jaerschky's 2005 build log being a great resource. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...Mike-Roach-DH2 Starting to wonder about Sourcing 3 or 2.5 mm Carbon tubes for booms. Wrapped 3mm carbonnes don't seem available in less than 1/4" diameter and if they were.. likely~20/30$ ...each Place (found it w/ Google) in Missisauga (sp?) has 2.5 mm Pultruded tubes for ~4$. https://www.google.ca/search?q=canad...hrome&ie=UTF-8 Will have to get onto that. |

We are contrarians Last bipe I assembled was a Flyline Stearman C3b (?) in around 1979 .
Rigging !?. Haven't a clue as to how. But it sure looks as if it will need rigging to keep it all flying in formation. Carbon booms alone don't seem as enough encouragement. Not today's problem tho. ps: I have a printer arriving next week.. UPS willing. |

Good luck on this. Shouldn't be too bad. Consider after all, this foamie! I now forget who manufactured this, maybe FMS?, but they wanted you to do the entire rigging job with one continuous piece of line threaded over, under, around and thru, and then again and again!!! Well, I tried but gave up on that idea. Thing is, it flew really well. The takeoffs were so smooth (and the bottom wing so low to the ground) you never were sure when it lifted off. Can't imagine any commercial outfit thinking there was a viable market for this. OH, its an Armstrong Whitworth FK 10.
On the subject, this is a kit very bashed old Kavan DH 2 I did, complete with rotating motor. This flew very nicely. I completely avoided the rigging!! |

Very nicely assembled DH... can only hope my effort will be half as pretty.
You really did omit the riggings.... and it clearly works !. Does make it look a little bit Nekid tbh. However I'm a Big fan of easier. Interesting sprung axles and wingtip hoops.. You planned for hard landings.. whereas I'm hedging against cartwheels Still hunting up 3mm tubes..bit of a pain, as None seem locally available, so far. Seems our friends at Hking are the only easy (?) source |

gluing today..
Assembled the fuse.. some steps forward .. a few back as well.
Leaving one's brain in Neutral... even with a Kit, can lead to the cutting of a few replacement parts . Got it together finally. Bit of confusion with the plan ensued tho. Differing: versions /scales/ accuracies. Gonna be some adlibbing required before this one's built. Another issue is the 1/64 ply turtledeck... although cut Exactly as per plan... ( both hand drawn and Published effort) is too narrow for intended fitment ... Grrrr. As in it's ~3/8 - 7/16"" too narrow .. simply not wide enough to reach either side of the fuse, let alone the overlap fit the plan suggests. Yesss all the formers are correct... at least as per plan (s) For whatever That's.. worth. Likely I'll needs be cutting a replacement turtle deck .. just as soon as I draw one that actually Fits. Who was it that claimed Model making is relaxing ? edit; Drew a turtle deck piece... cut a card tester.. seems OK so far. Card stock is seeming a passable substitute for 1/64 ply. Gonna give using it some thoughts. |

Hey Bare,
You know what they say about a man with two watches; trying to build a model from two plans has got to be a frustrating experience! As far as the turtle deck goes, I'll mock up a fuselage this weekend and re-size the turtle deck outline as required for future kits. Interestingly, Frank von J notes in his build that the part fit perfectly, so some precision has been lost somewhere along the way. Thanks for pointing this out, and I'll get it fixed. Steve |

Read / saw Von J's post where his deck piece apparently fit perfectly.
A full 1/2" width change on a 3 1/2" part ? Biggish error ...to happen inadvertently However, it's now patched . still needs a bit more work at the gun port end. Even the Cutout shape is sketchy........ see pix above Does make me wonder 'whats gonna surface'.. next Edit; Surprise!! found another issue... effing ribs ALL of them.. are 15mm Longer than the plan dwg (when leading edge added ..10mm before) This all ahead of the main spar. On one hand that means Mo' wing area, onna other it also means I have to draw new Lam wintip jigs as the plan ones no longer apply. My Profile Book spec sheets for wing Chord being 4'-9" . Passably similar would be good. |

Decided that I'm going to have to plot an Actual Clark Y...
Carve out a pair of Ply templates and sandwich each and every darned rib between the forms... then re cut every rib.. Some fun... But there's No other choice apparent is there? On a happier note: Cut out out the templates/jigs for Laminating the wing end bits from 5/16 Foam core (no nor $ store junk) See pix . No.. 100 pins nonsense. Just an inner and outer shape with Rubber bands as compressive force. A simple clean Jig setup White glue and 2 x 20 sec bursts in the Microwave to seriously cure the glue. First try was using Reeds. Will pop it out in a half hour or so to be 100% sure the reed is fully dried. |

Working from hand-drawn plans is often challenging. In this day of CAD-designed, laser-cut, fool-proof interlocking-parts kits, building a model from hand-drawn plans, even if the parts are CNC-cut, can be an adventure. When I designed the cutfile for your custom-sized version of the DH2 from Mike’s larger plans, I realized that the wing chord depicted in the top view of the plans didn’t correspond to the wing chord as depicted by the rib profiles on the same plan. To facilitate construction directly on the plans, I extended the ribs so that they would match the wing top view, drew the forms for the wing tips accordingly, and included a note in your short kit describing what I had done. You chose to discard the printed copy of the plan I included in the short kit (and the one I cut parts to fit) because it wasn’t scale enough and substituted another version you found somewhere else. As a result, the ribs I cut don’t match the plan you're using. I’m sorry you’ve had to endure this, and to make things right, as I mentioned in my response to your e-mail earlier today, I’ll cut you a new set of ribs that match the plan you found somewhere else and ship them to you at my cost. I will also refund you the full cost of your short kit and shipping. Thanks for pointing out the challenges of trying to adapt a kit cut from a hand-drawn plan to a different, much more accurate plan, and for the opportunity to ensure that future versions of this short kit will be better than the one I sent you. Dunno what happened. Too many bogus plans floating about
Extending the ribs didn't work overly well Yess .. a replacement set of ribs would be Great! Certainly can't be using the ones I have now ps: if anyone cares the Laminating Gizmo works! beautifully actually. |
