We have narrowed down the choices because the RC world has done a huge shift to 1/14 scale and abandoned 1/12 scale and we have almost nothing to fall back on. If there is logic involved in this, it escapes me. Then, how about taking a bunch of 1/14 scale vehicles and stretching the length to 1/12 size without doing the same to the width? Except for the consistency of the 1/10th scale vehicles, we are living with a chaotic hobby that will likely change to 1/13 scale just because it can. |

FH Diff Gear Buying Guide
We have had two problems with Ali Express links:
1) Often the links take you to the AE home page and not the listing 2) We know that the link may remain stable but the picture of the product (and therefore presumably the product) can change Therefore, it is best that I explain which gears are confirmed FH (H stands for Hard) so that buyers can determine if the gears they're looking at are likely to be hardened. Simply search for 12427/12428/144001/124018 etc gears and trawl through them until you find what you need. I'll provide a link for two types from eBay, where the links seem to work. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ For confirmed FH gears, look for a quality machined finish, a bronzey colour (haven't come across silvery FH gears yet) and the base on the diff input 0012 and tiny asteroid gears 0014. Look at Pic 1 below. These are older type FH gears, and are the only type I have received over the last year and a half. Note the 8 asteroid/spider gears at the right of Pic 1. The base of them is a disc. Also the diff input gears 3rd and 4th along on the top row. Now check Pic 2. You will see that the bottoms of the asteroid and diff input gears is not a flat disc but jagged, as you can see the individual gear tooth bases. I have never ordered or received this newer type, but they are likely to be fine, and seem to be the new type that is widely available on AE. At this point, we don't know if the newer, jagged type are FH, but I bet they are looking at them. The excellent machining and finish give it away. To help visualise the difference between the gear types, imagine if you took an asteroid gear, placed it base down onto an ink pad and then a piece of paper. The asteroid gears in Pic 1 would leave a circle on the paper: the gears in Pic 2 would leave a star shaped/jagged pattern with 12 points. When I say I have sets of FH gears, I have drilled the holes in the input and middle sized gears out to 2.5mm to take gruntier screws because the M2 screws keep breaking. I have had to use cobalt 2.5mm drill bits, which have struggled to make it through the steel, taking at least a minute or so. That is properly hard. Here's a link to a listing that shows confirmed FH gears: https://www.ebay.com/itm/18486334076...cAAOSw-6xfOh-2 Here's a link to the new type that are unconfirmed but almost certainly hardened. If anyone actually obtains a set of these, please let us know how hard they are! They cannot be softer than stock https://www.ebay.com/itm/23398621259...4AAOSwTF1giS7c |

Now now, they will not make 1/13 scale because 13 is an unlucky number Then again, they may produce one now just to piss you off We must take care not to get too worked up about all of this. How lucky are we to have the time and resources to be fannying around with RC cars at all? Plus, we don't need any medical events due to stress before we hit page 300 |

The ball for the FH gears is in your court. I disavow any knowledge. Page #1 reflects your request. No further discussion is needed or wanted.

In other frustrating news, over the weekend some muppets came along and 'tidied' our track while removing a pile of branches and organic material. They scraped the base at the end of the track clear, including our banked first corner (see pic). Nevertheless, this is an excellent opportunity to extend our track a little to give us longer straights, which we had wanted to do anyway. It may be a blessing in disguise, as we have shifted the end bank a foot or two a couple of times to lengthen the track and it was fairly heavy work. Since the photo was taken we have swept and cleaned the entire track, and straightened the edge on the RHS a bit. The great mound of soil to the right can be used to re-constitute the banking at the end of the track once we decide how long we want it to be. We may keep it full length so the Slashs can be raced on it It may be long enough, although those 3S monsters need plenty of space. Note the bags of sand to the right. Although it is not apparent in the photo, there are bits of the surface where the asphalt has worn away (from our racing), and we are going to repair the holes with mortar. At times, these holes have been bad enough to bring one to a sudden stop, which can cause great alarm as you can imagine. I'd like to fab a very small jump to place somewhere for a joker lap, although if we are doing that regularly it'd have to be a fairly small one to avoid too much damage if we are landing on seal.... |

Obviously, the person who actually owns the property has seen fit to do as he pleases with it. Didn't you have permission to be there? Is it privately owned or was it thought to be public use?
I have seen links to other parts to be ordered from Ali that come from the same obscure place that's in another place and time. To say the least, I'm not going there. I don't like Ali to begin with and am not about to order from a dealer in a place I've never even heard of. |

'Good, cheap and quick - you can only get two of them' ..and so it goes with that outfit, as long as you choose from the best of their products. Otherwise you only get cheap I have always had refunds for products that have never turned up, however the painful slowness of delivery is too much of an inconvenience for many. What is your alternative for parts acquisition? Will you source your bits from eBay, which uses Paypal and has better protection? Are you happy with Banggood which also allows Paypal? |

Banggood has almost nothing in stock if you search 12428. Then again, they know nothing about what they are selling and lump all WLToys parts together. That being said, it seems as if we got into the wrong scale of vehicle as they seem to never run out of the 1/18 scale WLToys stock and bling parts. I am not inclined to check every single day to see if the supplier for Ali is filling the order or if it will be cancelled. I'm a customer and that's NOT my job, it's theirs.
Posters have, in the past, indicated that the color of the gears means nothing. The bronze color did NOT indicate hardened gears. As far as I know, there is no way to harden pot metal. FWIW, in the 12402 thread, a guy indicates that when he went to swap to brushless on his 104001, he discovered the stock motor was a 560 size. I don't remember if that signifies a larger diameter or a longer can. |

Our place looked like a drone distribution centre yesterday. There was a mad fantic rush to get 10 batteries charged for the evening. We had a perfect calm night and enjoyed a few of them whizzing about. Sadly, not everyone checks their messages and so didn't bring AAA's for the transmitters. We had 3 going at a time though: definitely a hoot Turns out the seller sent the E65HW's instead of the E65H's, and so we have tiny cameras on them... I'll have to set it all up at some stage.

Eachine makes nice, cheap goggles. My set, though bulky, works fine for running around my yard with my 10428. Goggles, just like anything else RC, get outdated and can be found in the Classifieds here. I may have to update mine if they prove inadequate for long range stuff. There is nothing wrong with flying line of sight. Learn to fly that way before going FPV. That being said, going to FPV is akin to learning to fly all over again. If you have calm evenings, all the more power to you. I doubt you got decent instructions with the quad. It would be interesting to know if you could download an app and get the video on your smart phone. With more expensive quads/ drones/ you download an app and not only get the video on the phone, but you also use it for satellite communication which gives you GPS which gives you features like return to home, follow me, flying in a prescribed waypoint circuit, etc. While most of us don't even think about it, I have watched many videos where the reviewer mentioned the many satellites the app connects to - usually 7 to 12. The telemetry data that appears on the screen is amazing.
Speaking of telemetry, I am likely going to buy a RadioLink 6 channel for the long range stuff and that transmitter and receiver transmits your buggy's battery voltage to you as you drive (as well as the transmitter's voltage). Yes, the latest Traxxas transmitters do the same, but at what astronomical cost? The quads you bought are very cheap in construction and initial cost. Yes, you may get hooked and just have to have something better. In this day and age, especially if you're bringing your stuff to somewhere else to fly, the folding arm quads are the way to go. The number and features will set your head spinning. The thing to watch with them is range too. You don't need your new favorite quad "flying off into the wild blue yonder". When you know you're approaching your range limit or even if you get into a jam where you lose orientation or are blocked from seeing that beast, just hit return to home. My son, who flies quads as part of his job, is blessed in that wind is hardly ever a problem where he is. When the weather is bad, flying that little thing indoors is a real hoot. You may end up buying a small fleet for all in the family to enjoy. |

WARNING! Danger, Will Robinson
Very recently, our YouTube Australian reviewer has done reviews on the 124016 and the 124017. In both cases, he has had problems with cogging. He tried a program card and it didn't really help. In addition to that, he had range issues and came away saying we should stay away! Nice try, WLToys, but, ....

Update: checked clip, unforgiveable. Can't take off at all on an incline... range bad too! I am not sure about those 2845 motors: I would prefer to install a sensored 540 brushless in and tune it down if necessary. Lots of weight: but LOTS of power. Less heat too.... |

But no! I must concentrate on my speed 12428: I have spent so much time on these cars I may as well complete my suite of work. Still waiting for a few bits, including the performance analyser, which is close to arriving. I will do a speed run out of the box, and investigate the effects of my various upgrades. |
