how much does glow fuel cost you?

Reading the engine forum, we have all seen assertions that glow fuel is too expensive, unavailable, etc. I've heard lots of complaints, so I'm wondering about real numbers. How much does glow fuel cost in your local area?

I can buy fuel at a hobby store 50 miles from home, for around $17 to $20 per gallon, but I don't buy it.

I make my own fuel with mail order oil, and alcohol and nitromethane from a racing fuel shop. It costs me about $12 per gallon to make fuel with 18% oil and 5% nitro. How are things elsewhere?

I make all of my fuel too. 15% costs me about $12 or so to make. The oil is the most expensive part, but I refuse to skimp on it.

I guess it depends on where you get your fuel components from. FAI fuel costs me $5-6/gal; 5% Nitro 20% castor is about $8/gal. My car fuel is the most expensive due to the high Nitro content. 20/12 fuel costs me around $18-20 per gallon.

For me, the Nitro is the expensive part at $50/gal. Oil is cheap by comparison - $16-40/gal depending on what kind.

I just buy 4 gal lots of Sig fuel as I don't have a permanent place to live right now so holding large containers of fuel components to mix my own is out of the question. The cost of shipping makes each gal ( about $20 for 15% nitro) about what I paid at a reasonable hobby shop when I lived near one.

I will say though that I have seen hobby shops where fuel prices were completely out of whack so I understand the the comments I sometimes hear.

EDIT... Ughh, I just checked with Sig. Looks like they raised prices a little bit. I remember paying about 16-17 for a gal of 15%. its 20 something now....

The only place I can get glow fuel is a hobby shop 260 miles away on another island. They generally charge $35 a gallon of 15 percent. Then they charge an additional $95 to take a case of 4 gallons to the dock to ship to the island I live on. By the time I get a case of glow fuel to my door they average $65 a gallon.

Last time I checked, at my home brewing supplier, I paid €3,25 per litre (€12,31 per gallon, or 15,10 US$) for fuel containing 2% Nitro and 15% oil.
10% Nitro and 18% oil comes to €4,75 per litre, or €18/gallon (22,07 US$).
I never used high Nitro, but 30% Nitro would be at least €7/litre (€26,5, or US$32,5/gallon)

But buying at that supplier requires a 160 km (100 mile) roundtrip to get it, adding travel expenses to the price (if all practical expenses are accounted, driving a car in Europe costs at least €0,35 per km, so REAL travel expenses are roughly €55,-), so I would have to buy at least 5 gallon (20 litres) to make it a bit worthwhile.

Those are the lowest prices I can find.

LHS prices vary wildly depending on brand and composition from around 20 US$/gallon to maybe 35 US$/Gallon.
Closest LHS (80 km roundtrip) only caters to RC car drivers, closest LHS that carries Aero-fuel is about 130 km roundtrip.

Ready made fuels are tricky to get delivered at your door here and delivery can be expensive but that is a bit unpredictable.
Loose components are difficult to get, you need to be registered and licenced for storing large amounts of hazardous materials (which means you have authorities inspect and approve your storage).
Of course there are (illegal) ways around it, but doing that would void your Insurance, and since Nitro has been used to make bombs, if authorities figure out you order a drum of Nitro without being licensed, you can expect a visit....

We paid $30CDN or 24US last year. Previous years it was cheaper for a US gal. That's for 5-10-15%. We average the cost out with the club members.

Standard medium size 4 stroke brew is 14% nitro, 12% synthetic, and 2% castor. Price varies by local availability but under $10/gallon. Always a bargain at the end of the day
.Never really gave it that much consideration. Just part of the cost of having fun.
