Build Log

Canterbury J Group Build

This is the build log for Canterbury J’s #589, 603, and 604. Along with #590 they will be the West TX CJ Squadron. Though we have a few CJ build logs , this one will be unique inasmuch as we are building to nearly identical specs. The individual finish will vary but these will matched spec boats. Stay tuned. Build party.

Today’s build party. Carl is test fitting the winch mount. We will be using drum winches on a continuous loop / arrow shaft. The winch can thus be very low in the hull. I was busy framing #589 playing catch up.

That's a heck of a workshop! And the sail servo mount sure puts my cobbled together off of a foam-core-board handmade template mount to shame!

Looking great guys!

That servo mount is off the hook. It is head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Good work guys. Looking forward to following the rest of this club build.

Bracing for a generous rudder hatch on # 589. Experience with #590 convinced me of the nessesity. Also a little extra bracing for the after edge of the main hatch

Are you going to plank the deck on #589 Stephen....or just ply? And is that an "off the shelf" rudder arm, or custom machined?

Kevin, I do plan a decoratively planked deck , although this boat will otherwise be a stripped down version. The rudder post in the pic is Carl’s # 604 and the tiller arm is a spare for a DF 95.

Here’s a few pics of # 589 so far. The graphics are vinyl. The hull will be burgandy. Pictured is the new hatch framing , with plenty of rudder access. The compass rose is boxwood and ebony and will be inlaid on the rudder hatch. The red Welsh dragon is for the main hatch.

Stephen,

Probably the prettiest C-J I've seen belongs to Bob Eger in Sacramento. I LOVE the dark burgundy color.
