Name This 2 Meter/Spectrum refurb.

My flying buddies and I decided to do some thermal this year so I dragged this glider out of storage.

Needs a repair to the vertical and 6 good servos. That's it.

I probably should have posted in the thermal section, but I consider myself a slope head.

It's a 2 meter with a triple planform wing. 3021 airfoil.

Fiberglass fuselage and wing/stab are white foam core, obeche skinned.

So tell me what it is ?

We have a winner. Yes, it's a Spectrum 2 meter.

I don't know who's kit it was. I lost the instructions.

I wasn't trying to tease you guys, but I was curious if anyone was familiar with this glider.

I bought it at a swap meet in Wichita KS back in 95'.

Flew it a little bit off high start when I lived in Kansas.

Haven't used it here in Idaho. I've always been concerned about damaging it with our unfriendly LZ's.

What little I've flown it, it seems to be a good flier.

If anyone out there has experience with this model, I'd like to hear about it.

I've decided to give it a go again.

Thanks,

Ken

Set it up with 90 degree flaps and try to hand-catch it. Several of those have come and gone at our slope over the years. I'd probably use a Dixie Pin for the wingrod.

I picked up a 100" version for cheap a few years ago.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a Dixie Pin?

How did you like your Spectrum?

Thanks

Also I was thinking that Crow mixing or as you suggested 90 degrees of flap would be a way to slow the approach.

To be honest, I've never had a glider other than this one that was capable of these types of mixing.

There are two big LZ dangers where we fly; Rocks & Rotors !

We do have some green grass in the city limits, but it is governed by the soccer moms.

Dixie pin - m7 high speed steel pin used in heavy equipment industry among other places. A link pin in other words.

Most likely what my Spectrum uses for the wing joiner.

Spectrums and Prisms were made by Mark Triebs in the early, mid and late 90's . Award winning TD ships as well as fine slopers.

Mine is the X tail insread of the Tee. Mine has been around and met the ground enough times that it is in the 6 pound weight class now..

Oh and mine is a 3M ship.

90 degree flaps really slow a plane down. Just have your elevator compensation program cued up. Get some altitude and hit the flaps- it'll probably pitch up, so try again with some down compensation mixed in. Repeat and try a landing pass.

I think this is the molded Spectrum.

4:30 is a great landing. Some of our local slopes appear in the video.

Excellent input, thanks guys.

Now I'm really looking forward to getting it airworthy again.

Mine came with a carbon spar.

Like I mentioned before, I never really flew it enough to get to know it. So I will make an effort to fly it more.

I did consider converting it to a V tail but at this point I'm gonna follow the rule, " If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

I am curious how it would do with a V tail.

After reading the article in Soaring Digest about the Spectrum, I'm really jazzed about the glider, even though it's over 20 years old.

Cool beans!

I got mine from a flyer in NM...rough aesthetics, but flyable.....for CHEEEEEP!

I notice yours does not have the live hinges....mine does...hate 'em. Especially on a hollow molded wing which has seen better deades.

Oh well...I fly it like I stole it. Performs well at POTM.

PS...here it is.

My only reservation with mine is the rocker in the vertical stab sub-TE. It's sloppy, and the short elevator horn magnifies the effect. The "horn" was just a piece of aluminum tubing glued flush with the bottom ot the elevator- to put the horizontal stab on you slid it on to the elevator linkage, and then bolt the stab down. A longer elevator horn might be the way to go.
