Ft Simple Cub Build

i wanted a cub to train on,almost bought the ft simple cub kit,but figured id try building myself by using the free printable plans.
so i downloaded and printed.peiced the print together and noticed some pages had lines missing.....important lines.
so i broke out the tracing paper and transfered the pattern.
im hoping its right.
ill be using cheap walmart foam board similar to what ft uses.
a standard cheap mini glue gun.
it woulda been alot easier and faster to buy the kit,its onsale right now for $30.everything is already laid out and includes hardware.
a mini glue gun isnt ideal, the glue cools fast and sticks go fast aswell,a full size would be alot better.
but im going to stay budget and post final build cost after shes ready for electronics and flight.
gonna see how budget this kit really is.
this is also my first time building a plane.
the plans are well thought out, sofar i only have the fuse built, from tracing out pattern to its current stat ive got 3 hours invested in the cub.

all i got left are the wings, sofar 3 sheets into the build........$9 worth of foam board.
i made a measuring mistake and may need a 4th sheet to finish up wings.
on the print for each wing im guessing the width (those important missing lines) put me 1" shot on doing wings from 1 full sheet.
i ordered this cheap brushless setup to keep it budget,i went with a 7x4 prop.

in the back ground is 4x4 yamaha rhino 660,its the same size as a 10th scale crawler, and brushless.
everything is custom on that rig.

Looks like it will power ur cub just fine with 350+watts .. my little 1000mm cub flies sweet with 110 watts ..

I would like to do a scratch build with foam .
What hot glue sticks r u using ?

What bond r u using ?
im just using hot glue ,holding better than expected.(ad tech mini glue sticks)
the motor is overkill, but ive got another motor in my stock bixler v1.1 ill probably swap in.

R u going to make it 3 or 4 channel ?

I know what your saying about the hot glue cooling to quick .. when u glue a long bead by the time u get to bond the other piece the glue gets hard and is a nightmare to get a tight join ..

My kitchen always looks like a giant spider has invaded .. those stringy glue webs cover everything

for now a 3 channel,i can always ad 4 later.
thats whats nice about this kit,its laid out as a3 or 4ch.

installed a 900-1000 kv motor, added a scoop i printed awhile back.gotta trim the firewall a little to increase airflow into the electronics bay.
will be slow build untill i recieve the rest of the parts.
i did postal tape the wing, its design is very strong.
landing gear didnt work out,one file was corupt, the second design was looking good till it came lose on my printers bed.
ill figure something out.
giving the printer a rest tonight.

(edit) id motor as 1144 kv from flyzone cub select brushless i had back in the day.

came out better than i expected.
but 1 side of the fuselage print is slightly smaller than the other, wish i woulda caught it befor i folded and glueded.
thought hard about cutting her open and redoing, but ill just leave it and build another later.
$14 for another complete airframe n wing aint bad.
the wing is solid, weights more than the fuse.
ill weight her in lil while without motor n esc.

fuse 8 oz
wing 9 oz
close to 19oz complete plane electronics,

after i already ordered my new prop,esc/motor combo.....i found a spare esc, prop,a few motors i had stashed away....lol.
guess ill have extra for another build.

1140 kv turning a 8 1/4 x unknown pitch prop.
if i dig around enough i have servos......only thing im missing is landing gear and pushrods.
i tried 2 landing gear prints last night, one had a design flaw the other wouldnt stick to printers bed due to its thin design.
im trying a 3rd set now.

i just had to test out the power, soldered all my esc wires and deans connector, used my turnigy 9x to test.
im impressed with the amount of power.
first i tried 3s 1300mah stock bixler v1.1 battery, after 3 seconds full throttle the rpm drops to about 75%
threw in a 3s 2200 mah rated for 20c,same results.
only battery i had left was a 2700 25c,on this battery i ran full throttle 2 full mins no rpm loss......but its heavy.
i dont have servos or pushrods and it will pull outta my hand vertical,at about 80% throttle i can let go loosely and she will hover and slowly torque roll left.
the point
either my first 2 batteries are toast.....voltage checks out fine during balance on my imax b6.
or they just dont have enough c ratting too keep up with the demand.
the little 1300 came with bixler 20 amp esc and 1900 kv motor.
and acted the same on the bix.
the 2200 came from my old trex 450,i thinks its a 20c

the motor in the cub came from flyzone cub select brushless that was cursed(long story but i had 2 of these that both died the same way.....cheap esc connector lost connection in flight and plane done its own thing for next 20 seconds while reciever n esc reboots in the air)
the flyzones specs.....it was a nice plane, somewhere i have the inflight vid of the first crash.
Motor: Brushless outrunner, 1144kV
LiPo Battery: 3S 11.1V, FLZA6052 rated at 10c
Electronic Speed Control: 18 amp Tactic BL-18, TACM6610

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Flyzone-Fly...gAAOSwYlJW6cPP

so im running that motor and prop with 30 amp esc,and 2 of my smaller batteries can keep up.
good news after 2 min load test full throttle esc is slightly warm, motor slightly warm battery cool.

I haven't read through every post in this thread. So excuse me if I'm recommending something that has been suggested before.

I would HIGHLY recommend purchasing a watt meter and hooking it inline with your battery and THEN test your plane.

I did so with my Blue Baby 42" and got instant confirmation that I'd have more than sufficient power to fly. I believe that with a plane like the FT cub you need about 100w.

I'd also weigh that plane and get an All Up Weight (AUW) and then evaluate it against the readings from the Watt meter.

Here's some links that might be helpful
