CD Guidelines update, May 19 2018

The F5J USA Tour maintains a web page listing a series of CD guidelines. These provide F5J CDs with the benefit of experience from the running of past Tour events. We just posted a series of new guidelines based on things we have learned in 2018 events to date. Any questions let us know.

14. Declaring launch and landing directions (added 5-18-18)

In weather conditions where the wind direction is changing it is suggested that the CD or a line judge be prepared to announce both the launch and landing directions as described below. If possible these announcements can be made over the PA system for longer flight lines and/or accompanied with an arm point. Care should be taken in the pilots meeting to be clear on how to interpret the direction from arm points.
Launches: Announce the launch direction to pilots on the flight line no later than 30 seconds before launch. i.e. once the 30 second launch countdown has commenced the launch direction should not be changed.

Landings: If the wind has changed since launch such that a reversed landing direction would avoid a downwind landing, announce the direction change no later than 2:00 minutes before landing. Otherwise if no direction change is announced pilots should assume a normal landing direction based on the launch for that flight.
15. Suspending a contest due to high winds (added 5-18-18))

During the pilots meeting it is suggested that the CD declare how high winds may terminate or delay the contest. i.e. whether the CD will strictly adhere to FAI wind limits (26.8mph sustained for >= 1 min at 2 mtrs above ground) or whether the CD will make a judgement call based on safety and/or other factors. If a majority of pilots are willing, a wind hold delay may be the preferred alternative to just canceling the day’s flights.

16. Delay before turning after launch (added 5-18-18)

For safety reasons we suggest that in your pilots meeting you tell pilots they must launch and fly straight in the assigned launch direction for 2 seconds before turning. We suggest that you assess a 100 pt launch penalty if a pilot violates this directive.

17. Handling flight line infractions (added 5-18-18)

Especially for 2-day events, if at all possible it is suggested that you have at least one line judge who’s job is to watch for launch and landing violations. Typical launch violations can include launching before the start horn, starting the motor before the horn, or turning too soon after launching. The most common landing issue to watch for is landing after the end horn.

If you do not have a line judge then we suggest the following alternate way to “watch” for violations: during the pilots meeting say that if the CD receives a violation report from BOTH adjacent flight lanes from either a pilot or their timer then the CD can use both those reports as the basis for awarding a penalty. For pilots on the end lanes we suggest that you accept infraction reports from the two nearest lanes. e.g. with 8 lanes if reports are received from lanes 6 and 7 for an infraction on lane 8 then we suggest the CD accept this as the basis for a penalty.

18. No extended flying after emergency motor restarts (added 5-18-18)

If a pilot decides to do an emergency motor restart it is suggested that you tell pilots they MUST return immediately and land without any further attempts to thermal or otherwise extend their flight time. This guideline comes about after reports that some restarted planes have interfered with other planes in the air, or have caused other pilots to think the restarted planes were still having a valid flight.

19. Handling timer/watch failures (added 5-18-18)

According to FAI F5J rule 5.5.11.6 a) pilots are supposed to be given a re-flight if their timer person fails to properly keep the flight time. This can be caused by watch failure or a human error. This rule was written with the assumption that contest officials are providing the timers. If the CD suspects abuse he may wish to limit this type of re-flight e.g. one timer-related re-flight per pilot per contest.

2018 events application deadline: June 30

Just a reminder that the deadline for F5J USA Tour contest applications is June 30 @ midnight (PT). If you are a club that is still considering hosting an event note there is a wide range of open dates following the Team Selects on Sept 1-3 (Denver). I am aware of one west coast dual F3J+F5J event that will be announced soon for the end of October. The rest are open.

Any questions fire away.

If you look at the tour calendar you'll see there are only 3 more western region events and 1 more eastern event in the 2018 season. Then in early December the start of our 2019 season and the F5J in the Desert that will include our 2018 awards ceremony.

On deck: the Big Sky F5J is coming on August 17 up in beautiful Helena Montana. Put on by the Helena Flying Tigers it is a 1-day event that precedes their annual 2-day ALES contest. CDs are Greg Douglas and Carl Thuesen. See the calendar for details.

Thanks much.

Upcoming F5J Events You Really Should Attend!

BIG SKY F5J, AUG 17 (info)- The 2nd annual Big Sky F5J is coming on August 17 up in beautiful Helena Montana. Put on by the Helena Flying Tigers it is a 1-day event that precedes their annual 2-day ALES contest. CDs are Greg Douglas and Carl Thuesen. Pics from last year's event here.

BUZZ AVERILL MEMORIAL F5J, AUG 25-26
(info) - This is the 3rd annual "BAM" event hosted by the Albuquerque Soaring Association (ASA). CD Richard Shagam and the ASA club have put lots of planning and work into this. They have a beautiful field at the Balloon Fiesta Park. This is a week before the Denver Team Select event and will be a great "tune-up" for the TS. There is still time to sign up!

DENVER USA TEAM SELECTION, SEPT 1-3 (info)- This is the event with the biggest USA F5J impact this season. The top pilots from this event will qualify for participating in the first-ever F5J World Championships in Slovakia in August of 2019. The stakes are high. Organizer Jim Monaco has secured a great flying field and assembled a crack team to run the event. Even if you don't consider yourself a WC caliber pilot you can still get some good Tour points along with major bragging rights if you do well. IF YOU ARE THINKING ABOUT ATTENDING TIME IS SHORT FOR REGISTERING: you must register with the AMA no later than Aug 2 per the info at the start of this paragraph.

Chris, Jim, why can't the TS event also be a Tour event?
