Newbies fly first time free!

Good news! If you have never flown in an ALES contest come on out and give it a try. No charge the first time.

Yesterday's scores attached.

A great day of flying to start our season. Lift was generally bouyant and a good day for Radians as well as Open pilots.

Top finishers in our Foamy/Radian class were Kevin Wilmunder, Sriram (who will be majoring in Robotics at Santa Cruz in the fall), and Who's Your Daddy Carmody. Open class leaders were Chris Bajorek, Aric Wilmunder and JT.

We were joined by Robert Jackson, a new pilot to SVSS competitions and you can see his flights improve as the day went on. We also had a group of visitors that stopped by to watch the contest and they stayed and joined us for lunch as well.

Thanks got out to all of the participants and everyone who helped with both the setup and teardown.

Thanks Aric. Do you have a printout that shows the time and landing details?

SoaringDude, Just getting started in ALES, and have only flown in one event. I would like to know what your "Foamy/Radian" class rules are? I am currently flying a Radian. Do you use height / motor run limiters? I see you do now allow varios. Any other information would be helpful.
Thanks, SamH

Hi SamH, thanks for checking in. All ALES planes independent of class use an altitude limiter. The only difference for the foamies is that they fly in their own group so the scores are compared against other foamies. In our ALES contests no varios are allowed. You can see our ALES contest page at this link: http://www.svss.org/ales.html

Hope that helps.

Just an amazing day of flying. Storms seemed to have gone through Friday night, so we were left with partial clouds, and great lift.

A couple of spectacular low altitude saves showing that patience is indeed a virtue... once you found good air, just stick with it long enough and a few minutes later and you would find yourself climbing skyward.

Just a heads up that while I saw no-see-ums on my plane, they didn't seem to be in a biting mood yet. Mosquitos were hungry though and I brought out the bug spray.

Thanks Aric for a fun contest and a very nice lunch. As Aric said the thermal conditions and lack of breeze made for a day of many full flight durations and very high flights. The cloud deck at 3500-4000 ft helped visibility and marked some impressive hat-sucking thermals.

Aric would have gotten more landing points in round 4 had I not been a bit too close to his plane when we both turned on final. But he waived his right to a reflight to keep the contest moving.

Good fun.

July 28 ALES results

A small ALES group this month but mostly great thermal conditions as predicted by CD Lou Fox. Scores below include the round-by-round details (thanks Sandy for scoring and the round-by-round info). Lou will give more details soon. Thanks, Lou, for the apple strudel.

Comments from Lou:

A small but dedicated group of SVSS members competed in altitude limited electric soaring this past Saturday at our beautifully groomed flying site at Grasslands Park. Eight contestants started out the morning at 9 a.m. with cool mild breezes out of the south and a promise of great thermal conditions. Juvenile Swanison's Hawks were stretching their wings and marking thermals, an rc glider pilot's dream come true. Sandy Smith graciously caloled rounds, kept score, and announced pilot groups. We finished 5 rounds before one o'clock and beat the heat. Two pilots had technical difficulties with their equipment and were not able to complete all rounds.

Congrats to the top 3 winners.

First Place: Chris Bajorek
Second Place: Bill Curry
Third Place: Jim Thomas

As you can see by the scores of the top finishers, competition was tight. We had several guests visiting our flying site and complimented how nice it is. Possible a new member or two may come of it.

Thanks to all who came, participated, and helped with set up and take down.

Lou

August 25 ALES Results

See the ALES scores below. Thanks to CD Aric W. and scorekeeper Sandy Smith. Conditions were awesome. This was the first-ever time that both ALES and F5J were combined: 2 groups flew ALES and 1 group flew F5J. Sandy did a great job juggling both scoring systems on his laptop. Throughout this maiden voyage new ideas were discussed so next time it will go even smoother.

Look for more contest coverage in the Aug newsletter.
