Yeah, me too! My balsa wood sheets a 4x36" in various inch thicknesses, but they get weighed on a scale and recorded in grams because grams is what the scale does by default. And the spreadsheet that I design planes in takes those gram weights and works with inch measurements to give me weight (in g and oz) and balance (in inches).

Myanmar seems to have almost perpetual civil wars so I'm sure that's quite a distraction from niceties like standardizing their measurements.

Why is all of our crap in inches? Wish we went to the metric system long time ago. You know, a measuring system based on base10 numbering? Duh....

You can go, nobody will stop you.

Just remember that your computer works on base 2, just like our weights and measures.

It fell on Carter to implement it. It's my understanding that they installed the first metric only signage on a 63 mile (sorry, 101.4 kilometer) stretch of I-19 in Arizona, north of the Mexican border. There was such a huge and cry that the sky was falling and the end days were upon us, that the whole effort was scrapped. The signage is still there.

I was working at a small community hospital in Ypsilanti during that time. The conversation in the maintenence shop (which was the closest coffee pot to my biomed office/shop) during breaks echoed the hue and cry. The "if God had ment..." and "metric time" things were bombshells I dropped on the maintenance crew. Until the time thing, then the plant engineer came over to my office and asked me to stop it - he had to listen to them for the rest of the day.

It's good for other conversions as well.

Perhaps you are not familiar with Public Law 94-168 (89 Stat. 1007), the Metric Conversion Act of 1975. From President Gerald Ford's signing statement, "I am today signing H.R. 8674, the Metric Conversion Act of 1975. This legislation establishes a national policy of coordinating and planning for the increased use of the metric measurement system in the United States. ... I sign the bill with the conviction that it will enable our country to adopt increasing use of this convenient measurement language--both at home in our schools and factories and overseas with our trading partners."

The US has been using the metric system for decades.

I think the main thing here is adapting to change. I have many more SAE tools than I have metric and it is irritating to try to use a SAE tool only to find out you need a metric tool that you don't have. My worst experience with metric is when I bought a Dynam Tiger Moth and got a bag full of tiny metric screws and nuts with no way to tell what size they were, until I bought a metric ruler. Frustration at it's finest.

Perhaps you're not familiar with the USA. We've actually been ignoring the law for decades.

Just ask NASA.

pull up -- PULL UP!!!
I mentioned I'm an engineer. I worked on Mars spacecraft programs. There was actually a Mars orbiter mission that missed the planet because of a metric/imperial snafu. Not my fault, I'm a lander-team guy. All our missions were successes.

Indeed. Not having changed over is ridiculous. Causes us to have to waste time educating people (Engineers) on conversions they shouldn't need.

Who walked on the moon first with equipment build with good old 7/16 and 3/4 inch sockets and wrenches? Gee, it was us! I use both and don't have a problem except when I'm working on something that uses both.
