2018 Buzz Averill Memorial F5J Aug 25-26

Announcing the 2018 Buzz Averill Memorial F5J Soaring Classic (BAM 2018), sponsored by the Albuquerque Soaring Association (ASA).
This event will be held at the world-class Balloon Fiesta Park, home of the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, featuring acres of grass and lift, on Saturday, Aug 25 and Sunday, Aug 26, 2018. The venue is located at the north side of Albuquerque, close to I-25 and convenient to lodging and restaurants.

Our 3rd Annual BAM honors our long-time founding club member, leader, soaring expert, and all-around great guy, Buzz Averill (see tributes here: https://goo.gl/SVB5Qp). This event is part of the 2018 F5J USA Tour (http://www.f5j-usa.com/calendar/). This is an AMA-sanctioned event, AMA #18/551.

The event is in the early planning stages, with registration set to now open sometime in April or May. Check back here and at http://www.soarabq.org/ as we finalize our plans. Register only at http://www.soarabq.org/F5J_forms_201...02018_form.htm.

The Pilot Roster can be found here: Pilot Roster

We look forward to seeing everyone in warm sunny New Mexico in August!! Please post if you plan to attend.

Happy soaring!!

I will be there! If there are any F5J pilots who haven’t flown the BAM, this is an awesome event and it’s returning to the Balloon Park which has hotels very close by. The entire ASA crew are terrific hosts. And you can bet there will be all the iced watermelon you can snarf down. So come join the fun!

Thanks for the plug, Ed

Check out the current issue (Feb 2018) of RC Soaring Digest at http://rcsoaringdigest.com/pdfs/RCSD...SD-2018-02.pdf to get a peek at what the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Park venue looks like. The article is about our highly successful Nov 2018 F3RES International Competition, but check out the pics showing our acres of grass-covered field.

And by the way, we will also be repeating the F3RES competition, again in Nov., so plan for both events.

I am in!

So does this include the new daredevil pre-qualifying element that was introduced last year? The bog jumping was epic at the sod farm!

Sorry, Randy
Last year's 'bog jumping event' at the Sod Farm was an anomaly because we couldn't get the Balloon Park for the contest date we needed (which, itself, was driven by a cosmic event that 'eclipsed' our nominal date). We are, in fact, promising dry, paved roads, and acres of good clean green grass, unless Albuquerque happens to be 'blessed' with a flood of Biblical proportions. (Well, it is our monsoon season, so it could rain in the afternoon.)

In short, if you want mud, you'll have to go down to the Rio Grande--it's nearby, and there's plenty there!!!

Looking forward to you coming

Agreed, especially before TS.......... Did you repair your Ultima? I filled my wing gash with balsa and covered in carbon....

I can see F5J planes having a short life with 10+ pilots flying in the same low level blender......
