Help Making Custom Cutwater
So I'm in the process if building Legends Miss Severn model. I want to make a stainless steel Cutwater rather than using the supplied sticky foil tape. I made a nose cap out of copper for my Crackerbox and had a hell of a time soldering that. My soldering skills are horrid as I don't have the steadiest hands Wondering how difficult stainless steel is to solder in comparison to brass? Was thinking about making a mold of the front to work with. Would love some input regarding the thickness of sheet to use and type of solder etc and any other information you care to share. If I make a mold, would anybody be able and willing to make the cutwater for me for a fee? Not sure how feasible it would be having someone make the cutwater with just the mold to work with. I'm in the Portland area if anyone lives close who might want to help. Really trying to make this build top notch!
Thanks in advance for your input and help! |

I'm not the expert, but I think soldering with stainless steel would be very difficult unless someone has the proper tools. I would lean towards making it in brass which with some practice is fairly easy to work with and then have the part plated in a chrome like finish. I live outside of Newberg, I might be able to help you if you decide to go with a brass piece. Bob |

Hi Bob, I was thinking the same thing in regards to making it in brass and plating it. That is what I did for the nose cap I made for the Crackerbox. I just was hoping to make it with stainless and skip the plating. I plated the piece myself and it came out okay but the plating wasn't very hardy and I had to top coat it with urethane to keep the plating from peeling. I live in Tualatin so Newberg is real close. If when I am ready to build the Cutwater, may I send you a private msg and perhaps we can get together to work on it or at least talk about ideas techniques?

Hi PDX man(lotta Bobs in this thread)
I don't know if you made that cutwater yet but to answer your question..stainless is easier to solder then you realize..infact its easier to solder then to form. But you have to use silver solder and not that watered down silver solder you get in the hobby store. You need 1100 degree or better(almost pure silver from a welding supply and the appropriate flux). Also the almost pure silver polishes up so well that if you get sloppy you really wont see it on the stainless. Now you can get that kind of heat with a bernz o matic torch from a home store. Another option is to fabricate the cutwater and take it to a shop that makes commercial stainless , like for food services. Have them weld it then you do the grind and polishing-might cost a bottle of Jack. |

For a cutwater try thinner stainless and form it over a wooden form, or mould...

Suggestion -make the cutwater with tabs that can be clamped to a frame to hold the two halves together..invert the assembly ,lay flux and silversolder in the full apex of the cutwater and heat with a torch (close to but not quite cherry red) it should all melt and flow together. then cut the tabs/grind and polish..
