I also have contacted the Sandy Valley community organizer and they are thrilled we will be back. Community organizations will again cater our 4 days of lunches. We will have the exact costs completed before registration opens and you can choose to have food and pay for it during the registration process.

One aspect of referencing a daily average wind speed is that it is a 24 hour average. This can provide misleading information regarding the winds during the day. Note that on the 2017 event the day of the highest wind had essentially zero wind at night and early morning on the field, although it was quite windy higher up. The wind on the ground didn't pick up until after the sun came up and started heating the cool air that was pooled in the valley floor. That blown out windy day likely had a 24 hour average wind speed of maybe 10-12 mph, not the 25 mph and higher that we had during the strong mid-day conditions.

Love the site!

Hey Jim - I for one LOVED the flying site and am really looking forward to flying there again. The conditions were great and if it gets windy, that is fine...that's why these models have ballast tubes! Hopefully there will be a good spot for RV's and campers on the field...that was the only thing that could have used improvement. One thing about Schnepf that was always great was the festival atmosphere on the field at night. Hoping we can carry on with it again this year. Thanks for all the work you do on the event!

I tend to agree with Steve, Joe and Darwin in different areas.
I personally love the site. It is easy for people to criticize the site but where were you guys when Jim spend a ton of time looking for his pot plantation when all of a sudden he found the rc farm!! Lol!! Had to give you some shitsky Jim. Seriously, there is no perfect spot to please everyone.
Sandy Valley is not exactly La Jolla though one can admire the Sunday Valley yatch club right on main street. Swear god is there and has at least one boat!
We all debated what the weather was going to be last year and all in all it was windy. Day 1 of 3j was perfect, day 2 was fairly windy with tons of people landing out. Day 1 of 5j was ok, not great and day 2 was blown out.
I've flown the area quite a bit on a full size glider and landed a fair number of times and every time I fly there or land it gets windy. I think may will get windier and this can potentially get worse with thermal activity. Freaking dust devils in may happen by the minute and with a 15mph wind and dust devils kicking in, they can move and kick ass so quickly. But hey, its more fun and Bob and Barry can sell more planes after the carnage is over!!

I personally organized a large 5J in Argentina this year and decided to move the site to a place with less potential wind and rain. But I understand if that is not possible here.

For some reason nobody is talking about heat which I tell you, can be pretty high in Vegas in may. Four days of mid 90's with winds can wear even on Joe W who is not 40 anymore ))

Folks, at this point it is what it is. I am going and I am supporting the event. I can only speculate on the weather which is all everyone else can do. Flip the coin and hope for the best. If we get bad conditions then we would have to find a better site for 2019 and if the weather is great we will be debating this all over again the same time in 2018.

Happy New Year to everyone

For the record, I very much agree with the sentiment of Marios post. I'm planning on ensuring that I have ballast... lots of ballast! The locals talk about wind, the data suggests wind, maybe we will even get some wind. The happy thing about wind is that it reduces the emphasis on landings and increases the thermal skill emphasis (as well as luck factor, but there always is some).

If I can get approval to attend, I'll be there!

If you go to a World Championship, there will be wind. If you're a pilot, you better be prepared to fly in it. Sandy Valley will be good practice, so take full advantage of it. By now, no one should show up unprepared for wind. If it stays calm, you'll end up with a landing contest. I hate those.

Actually, if it stays calm in F5J it will be a thermaling contest . I just had a thought: wouldn't it be a hoot if all 4 days were fairly calm?

Fairly calm all 4 days? I wonder what would be the odds at the casinos for that to happen?

So whats wrong with wind???
Bring it on.
It's the one thing that most soaring pilots aren't good at because they stay home when its windy.
We need lots more experience at competing in wind.
I have been to 4 consecutive F3J Worlds and they all had wind (lots of wind) and arguably most often those pilots who got through the windy day unscathed featured on the podium.
All that being said we certainly don't want to see a blowout.
I say thankyou to Jim for organising this spectacular Soaring event for all.

I'll take the bet FOR wind Greg. Hot, in the middle of nowhere, high probability of wind, and for me a very very long drive doesn't sound appealing. Even though I'm WELL prepared to fly in the wind AND have done so and am not afraid to do so ( I'm an Ex sloper) . Personally I'll probably wait till very last minute to decide on this one. I personally find Visalia to be one of the best sites out there for many reasons. But I do understand the value of flying in a variety of conditions. It would be a nice opportunity to fly my big green monster, which I believe has the capability of outflying just about anything out there in the wind.
I'll consider this an adventure ;-)

Ps edit : flying in 25mph wind??? Psssh!! Give me something HARD to do ;-)

No Ben,, it'll end up as a launch altitude contest if it's calm,,that's the beauty of F5J . Personally i've got BOTH ends of the Spectrum covered in terms of planes. I just don't have anything for the middle :-O

Wnd

I think if you want to be ready for the WC you will want to fly this event. I'm fairly certain you will get some windy practice and the rumor is that the site for the WC will be windy!

Hotel Accomodations

OK - I did my best but was unable to get any group rates at the northern hotels so we are back at the same location in Primm. The good news is that they will again try to arrange for us to be all on the ground floor near the rear entrance. It is Cinco De Mayo weekend, and there is some kind of concert going on at Buffalo Bills so they will be busy. They are still getting the contract finalized and get be a group number for you. Here is the preliminary info:

Weds, May 2, 2018 @ $30.00 Net
Thurs, May 3, 2018 @ $30.00 Net
Fri, May 4, 2018 @ $85.00 Net
Sat, May 5, 2018 @ $109.00 Net
Sun, May 6, 2018 @ $40.00 Net

All room rates are based on a maximum of two adults per room, Single/Double Occupancy, and do not include 12.5% Clark County Room Tax. We require that at least one person over the age of 21 years old must be registered in each room. There will be an additional charge of $5.00 per extra person with a maximum occupancy of 4 guests per room.

Please add the mandatory resort fee of $18.00 per room, per day and includes Wi-Fi and other amenities.

I will let you know as soon as I have the group number confirmed.
Jim
