May the RC Be With You

OK file this under one of the coolest things you've ever seen. At the Model-Hobby-Spiel Fair in Germany last month, a team put on one heck of a show for the crowd flying radio controlled podracer drones. These custom aircraft were highly detailed with lights, paint and pilot figures of notable Star Wars characters.

The podracers are based on carbon fiber frames and use standard tricopter components for flight. They also have forward and likely reverse thrust motors in the nacelles for level forward flight as well as some interesting attitude control which you can see later on in the video posted below. While they don't travel all that fast in the video, it is still an impressive demonstration.

Awesome!

This video is so much better than the brief cell phone videos that were published right after the event. I had no idea the scale and just how big they are!

Here's an idea: use a flight controller with a barometer for basic altitude hold, then concentrate more on forward flight and maneuvering without the crazy height variations.

Would that be accurate enough at such a small altitude difference?

Maybe some sort of laser rangefinder would work better.

sonar is the simplest way for cm precision altitude sensing up to 5m high.

May the schwartz be with you !

with multiple units racing in close proximity there's no way to make sure that one unit doesn't pick up another units' echos instead of its own.

Laser is even worse, light is reflected perpendicular on surface, any banking send the ray in the walls. Rather a phase change system, like those used for autofocus in the camera industry.
Sound is more forgiving, and hard to believe the reflected path to be short enough to be sensed by a neighbour. Each pod can have his own tone, you simply ignore the C-sharp of the neighbour knowing that your pod is tuned on D-flat

Does any one know where to find more info on these. My son is such a fan he would love to build one of these.

Maybe any build info on what components they were using?

Here is another link with an additional video.

Total Wow

I dont believe any build logs or plans have been posted.

SOOO much of what is seen on the floor at Model-Hobby-Spiel Fair and Intermodellbau are one-off models with no published plans.

Good idea! But... C-sharp and D-flat are two different names for the same note.

What about just an accelerorometer that detects movement up or down, sort of like a vertical gyro?

Inertial devices drifts permanently, they don't have an absolute reference.
Maybe coupled with a sonar, to warn about reaching a minimal height, and recalibrate at that point.
