Very successful maiden today in my COVID Secure private no public access field. Very stable model. I need to add a bit of shim as the blades are too lifty, bigger wheels for winter as the ground is rough, and I don’t like my colour scheme much so need to add a bit of white. Nothing wrong with the model though.

Hang the model in ready to fly state with blades extended from the Jesus nut, spindle. The angle is between the thrust line and horizontal so you could use the stab. The model is very tolerant but I would start at 15/18 degrees then adjust after test flight

John Greenfield’s C30. I was very impressed with the way this model flew, to the extent that I’m starting to gather bits and ideas, including a visit to Coolwind’s website…. John is planning two bigger versions. As an LMA member, the largest might be quite big!

Having been motivated see John Greenfield’s C30 flying, mine is nearing completion. A club member is printing the radial engine for me, and I need to sort the fairings for the undercarriage legs. Sadly the weather has been poor for a little while, and looks set to continue in that vein for a while, so it is not clear when the maiden will take place.

I ended up using some balsa trailing edge stock, carved to an airfoil section. On the main undercarriage legs I formed and soldered some thin brass plate and the fairings are secured to these using thin double sided servo tape

Managed to find a short weather window to complete maiden flight and two further flights. Everything went well, and I am very pleased with the handling. Other than a little left rudder trim, and a couple of clicks of left cyclic, it flies hands off. The sound of the the blades chirping is wonderful, and I found it easy to chuck it around at low level with confidence. I was on my own at the field, and it was late in the day and a bit gloomy, but I managed to prop my iphone up and capture some video. It needs a bit of editing, but here is the raw version:

@Simon beautiful precision flyer. Nice!
PS Is there any reason why it is not possible to leave a comment underneath the video? Probably you unintentionaly left the video checkmarked for kids? |

Got the 3D printed radial assembled, painted and fitted to my C30, and today after days of strong winds the wind was just right, and I was able to get another 5 flights in - The hang angle was slightly better with the weight of the radial on the front, and other than needing to fly around on a slightly higher throttle, the model behaved just as well as the first flights. This was the first time that I have flown it with fellow club members at the field, and they were all fascinated and impressed by it’s looks and the way it flies. With a bit of breeze today it was possible to do servo speed landings. Such a good design!
