The Skywalker name continues for FPV-based fixed-wing aircraft with the new SMART EPO wing. The Skywalker SMART is a twin motor flying wing with a 39" (996mm) wingspan and is setup for a pair of 2206 2300kv motors and 30a escs. Power comes from a 4s 1500-3300mah lipo battery that mounts in the center fuselage of the SMART. There seems to be a decent amount of room inside for the battery, along with a dedicated spot for a multirotor-sized flight controller. The esc's are mounted on each motor pod to maximize cooling and save space. Up front, there's room for an FPV camera and HD camera in the nose.

I don't have one, I just put together a news story.

But judging by the pic showing the props, they are indeed counter-rotating.

Interesting. Had I been the designer, I'd probably have extended the motors/nacelles backward and put the vertical stabilizers on there instead of on the wingtips, where they tend to get caught up in something all the time

Skywalker Smart is integrated racing with FPV aircraft. We still sell PNP version, if you use that configuration, it could reach 130KM/H.

So are the two motors for differential thrust?

Say you start to waggle on the yaw axis, the computer (SMART) kicks on and buffers out the waggle thus holding firmer yaw authority maybe?

I haven't seen anything that indicate that is the case. But I expect that it would be easy to do with iNav on a cheap F3 controller.

So is the function of the two motors for "cool factor" or does it serve some kind of a engineering/performance advantage?

I would assume it to be a combination of "Cool factor" and engineering/performance advantage:
- Smaller prop less prone to break on belly landing allowing central thrust line
- Dual counter rotating props cancel out torque roll on launch

This works very well on my twin motor mod Skyfun:

TwinFun FPV (1 min 25 sec)


I haven't seen any useful application of a diff thrust set-up, apart from on a TwinStar that was able to maneuver on a frozen lake (but not frozen enough to walk on)
