Heaviest flying weights

I'm involved with a group that is looking at the possibility of utilizing one of the 5+m wings for a UAV project. Thing is, we need to be able to fly at a weight approaching 15kgs. Have any of you folks with the larger wings ever flown at a weight near this? We are talking about taking off from flat ground with a trike unit, not slope soaring at this weight.

Any firsthand experience would be greatly appreciated.

I flew my 4.3 Nexus at only 3.6kgs so I haven't approached anything close to that weight. The weight on the Opale 5+ meter wings say they can do 12kg so you can probably stretch that to 15 and be ok. You'll just need lots of power to climb out.

Zb from Esprit got back to me, and said that they fly the 5.2m Hybrid on the XL trike at 40lbs/18kgs.

WOW I had no idea these could get that heavy!

Wonder how they handle at that weight, I imagine penetration and speed come easy with that setup.

Here is a video of the 5m Hybrid/XL trike combo flying at 40lbs/18kgs.
Looks like it's doing quite well.

Wow. I would not have thought that.

I have the Flair 4.5m and I fly it around 5 to 6.6kg. The Oxy 5 is only slightly bigger.

I guess it depends on the wind and what type of flight you are trying to achieve. I like to thermal my wings. I go up high and cut the motor.

I load as much weight as necessary to get the wing stable and keep me out of trouble but not more than that. At one point yes the Flair can take more weight but I find you do not gain anything.
