speedy arrives!.. 1st ARF.. yikes. who's gonna build it?
I even ordered the accessory pack from hobbylobby.. it says and I quote "everything you need to prepare a model for flight except radio gear" bottom line? I paid 22 bucks for a tube of 5min. epoxy, a couple strips of velcro and some servo tape... step one is to do the ailerons.. hey guess what?.. no control horns in the "everything you need" pack...Basically, I have no building experience. I look at this ARF and don't have a clue where to start. the instructions are poor.. Kirk warned me of this. I knew I was in trouble when I read the first sentance " Dear customers: you are given a toy plane kit made in ARF design".. O.K. gotta start somewhere.. The ailerons are hinged, but do I need to add extra tape to them? it appears it's just the covering holding them in place. If so, what kind of tape and where do I get it? MANY more questions to follow...LOL.. thanks, TIC

Sorry I cant be much help since I do not own this plane.
The covering should make a fine hinge. I would not use additional tape. keep posting your questions there was a posting on this plane with great pics of the radio instalation. Do a search - maybe it is still there. good luck! |

My first F5B ship came without any instructions. I learned a lot of new modeling techniques here - how to make my own control horns, how to mount the elevator conrol rod directly to the surface, how to moun the servo in the tail, etc. You'll get a lot of advice here, but it will seem frustrating at first until you get all the answers you need.
My $0.02 worth: add some tape to the covering hinger - just Crystal Clear packing tape (Staples) cut in half (1" wide strips) to help prevent the covering from tearing at the edges. Also, if you're going to use servo tape, clean the surfaces with alcohol first, and be sure to apply a thin layer of expoxy (and let it fully cure) before trying to use the tape on wood! Personally, I would never use tape - just wrap the servos in heat shrink, shrink it on, then glue the servos in place with goop, PFM or silicone. ..a |

Actually I servo taped on the 1/2A control horns! Worked great and never a failure.
If I had it to do over again, I would bolt them in place and do the following: 1) Make sure the control wire is several inches longer than necessary to reach each aileron and pass through the center servo mouint area. Cut this in half if not already done. 2) Make a Z bend in one end of each half of each control wire. Attach to control horns and attach control horns to ailerons. Holes should be over hinge line. 3) Take a scrap piece of wire about 2-3" long and make a Z bend in one end. Place this parallel with the 2 control wires in the servo mount area of the wing, wrap with solid buss wire and solder in place, making sure it is positioned so that the ailerons are both neutral and the Z bend is in a good position for the servo arm. You can reheat and adjust later if it is not right. 4) Install servo. I used HS55 on a block of balsa which brought the servo up with the servo arm pointing into the servo cavity. Good luck! Steve |

Thanks guys. I kinda get what you mean by soldering a small piece of wire w/ z bends to the control wires coming out of the pushrod tubes Steve. I don't think the speedy is going to fly anytime soon as I am going to take my time and TRY and do it right. Question, why do I need to put heatshrink on the servos?. I DO think I will glue them w/ household goop instead of using the servo tape, the tape looks like it is pretty good, but doesn't give me a warm fuzzy, knowing that's all that's holding the servos in place. Steve, where did you mount your rx? a picture or two would be great,if anyone has any. Dauntae,it's a czech republic kit, made by WIPA. This is a far cry from the skyscooter! Beautiful wing though, I'm happy just looking at the wing.. LOL

Mine came w/ control horns...call Hobby Lobby and ask them for it.
I epoxied the elevator servo to a piece of balsa, w/c I in turn epoxied to the inner fuselage side. I just don't trust servo tape. I used an FMA S-80. The same thing as above is done for the aileron servo, but I had to scrape some wood in that aileron servo well so most of the servo is "within" the wing. I used an FMA S-100. You may not have to do this....but I find the downward aileron deflection not enough so I cut the ailerons from its hinge point and add a few millimeters of clearance between the wing trailing edge and aileron strip leading edge then used Scotch Magic tape as hinge. Am using FMA Xtreme Rx, Astro 02 BL (bolts like a speed 400), 7-8 cells 600AEs, 4.7x4.7 prop, and a Graupner 30mm spinner. Take your time...once you've installed the aileron mechanisms, you're halfway through. I think the latter is the most "complicated" part. When you're done, you'll be awarded with a nice flying bird . My very recent procedure was to put shrink over the servo, including over the tangs on the servo, shrinking it tight, then putting good quality servo tape on the bottom of the servo. I then used a little 5 minute epoxy on the tape to glue it to bare wood in the wing. Seems easier than trying to get the tape to stick to bare wood. Now if I want to remove the servo, my exacto knife cuts the shrink on the top of the servo and it lifts right out with no mess. It worked really well, and this is the first time I tried it. Just make sure you get a nice smooth surface of shrink tubing on the bottom of the servo where you wnat to put the tape. If not, just cut off the tubing and try again. Joe |

I should have warned you before I sent the pics. This was MY screwup -- I had done the assembly of Speedy, taken the pics, written the notes, all which was to go with the kit, but better yet into the Hobby Lobby web site with Speedy. Sorry for innundating you with the pics. If you seem to be missing some just email me. Early next week the pics and captions and comments should be up on the HL website in the Speedy box.
