Cox Babe Bee vs AP Wasp
Ok...I hope I have y'all hooked now!
I have a 50+ year old Scientific P-40 (not the Red Tiger) recently picked up. This one is unusual in that it is 24" WS symmetric airfoil vs the 18" flat-bottomed airfoils of the other profile fuse, built-up wing kits (like the Scientific FW90 and Typhoon). The plans show an 8cc tanked Cox reedie...I'm considering an AP Wasp with an 1 ounce tank. Dunno which way to go?!? Pics and details are over in Control Line. Any ideas or recommendations are welcome. Thanks in advance. |

I last flew a little combat with a reedy on a Lil Bat combat. It seemed fast enough on 30 ft lines, but went slack and just seemed mushy on anything but level flight. A Satan would be better. I had something similar to a Satan as a kid and it felt very solid and was great on 42 ft. lines with a TD .049. I think the AP would be similar. I said to run it because I only have one AP .06, and it doesn't keep a tune. I got it used, and I guess it was worn out. I have lots of AP .09 and .15s that are fairly strong runners without a muffler.

For what it is worth: my AP Wasp ran about the same or slightly better than my Cox TeeDee 051.
The wasp should eat any reedy for breakfast any day AFAIK.... |

This was the very first plane I ever built!
It's great to see another. I made an appeal on RCG for a copy of this plan some time ago with the intention of building another and a kind fellow RCG'er scanned and sent it to me. I have attached the CAD file and the files for those that want to laser cut their own. The cowl would be a bit problematic unless you took a plaster cast and vac'ed your own but I think most of us would have left it off anyway.

I did pull a casting/plug, but I have no heat/vac system. My intent is to cut off 1/8" from the front and double-ply the nose. The primary bulkhead and braces will be glued in place. The extra one will be drilled to bolt on to the rest so that I can change engines, engine-placement at will without tearing the plane apart. The plug goes to Dave Cowell of DPCModels as he got the wood scans/original plans from my kit so he can reproduce them like the rest of his line. Thanks for jumping in...and check out progress as I report over in Control-Line. |

Just a quick shot. The firewall is drilled out for the Bee as originally planned by Scientific.
The AP Wasp mount is drilled to match the Bee pattern. Right now the plane can still go either way. I may bolt on a Bee for the initial flight, and then pop on the Wasp. Then the plastic cowl will be trimmed to fit the chosen engine. |

If no cowl would balance better aesthetically, thrust across the airfoil and loading during landings if lower on the firewall.
The cowl sure wants you to invert that engine lol. |

You could also sand down a wooden plug to shape and melt a plastic drink bottle around it with a heat gun. That works pretty well too.

Gentlemen, all good points! I appreciate the input, and will look closer at the suggestions. This is why I dropped the post here.
I looked at inverting the engine, but that puts all the plumbing inboard, and lower that the tank. I had problems fueling a similrly setup Norvel, with the tank higher than the venturi I have the original cowl, still unglued. Putting the Wasp right side up places all the plumbing outboard, with fuel coming in just about level with the tank. It also means, unfortunately I'll be cutting out a bathtub looking hole topside. The jury is out on the Wasp...I'm leaning towards that engine hard since I want the Bee to stay on my Lil Satan. More to follow as the build continues! |

I appreciate the input on engine choices. Not much left to do but wheels, complete the lead-outs, and clear-coat. I hope to fly it later this week.

Probably too late because the holes are drilled, but you could put either motor on sideways as the tank height will be correctish. The AP would go nicely on a Satan too if you can fit a tank in. That looks really nice with the uncut cowl on a profile fuselage with all the details.
