Miss Flying XC at SVSS. The tree tunnel has been an issue. Going from the field launch site to the coarse has been an issue. That short section with the tree canopy causes us to loose site of our planes. Was thinking this morning about the problem. One solution my team has used is a person at the coarse side (spotter with a radio) It does work.

Maybe something better solution would be to use the wireless trainer function on the newer radios. Master radio has control of the plane to the tunnel, switches to student control, with the other pilot at the end or course side of the tree tunnel. Student control will guide XC plane thru tunnel once he identify the right plane. Not use if the wireless trainer function will work that distance of tree tunnel. Theory needs to be tested.

The T3000 could probably solve the tree tunnel problem. It is pretty easy to stay on a straight heading just using the T3000 screen for the short amount of time that the glider would be out of visual while traversing the tree tunnel. Then re-acquire visual out on course. The big problem most of us have experienced is when the glider veers radically off course while out of visual so that when you emerge from the tunnel its not anywhere near where you think it should be and you cannot find it in the sky again.

It depends on the wireless trainer unit. The FrSky version that Aloft sells for the Taranis should work fine, as it uses a full-range receiver with PPM output to the trainer input. Similar receiver-based systems should work as well.

The built-in units on many transmitters are short-ranged and likely will not work.
