What can I build that performs in small indoor areas like a UMX Vapor Lite HP?

RTF they sell for about $100

I want to build or make kits for my adult children that:

they can fly in small areas indoor or outdoor

are slow, stable, easy to fly RET

gives them a Tx they could use on other models if they like

has all of the build/fly/repair advantages of a foamie

I want to keep the spend at ~$100 or less for everything

Suggestions?

Have a look here --

I don't know how long this link will work for, if it fails, search Banggood.com

If it flies - I want one!

If you are scratch building, have a look at the Hangar Rat and its variants - some examples on my blog, right down the bottom.
They work well and any desired size and using balsa and/or foam.
But sadly I have been unable to design or build anything that quite matches the Vapor family for sweet, light and slow.
Cheers,

Take a look at the scratch built micro indoor forum :
https://www.rcgroups.com/scratchbuil...cro-models-85/

There are several protocols that have 1S powered micro bricks available ( receiver , ESC and two servos .... all built in to a TINY unit about the size of a matchbook ) , the least expensive one is this FlySky protocol brick : https://www.banggood.com/WLtoys-V911...s-p-77849.html There are more expensive bricks available for DSM2/DSMX ( like the Vapor brick ) , and also for Tactic : https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBPYD&P=0

Banggood sells this airframe ( similar to a Vapor ) that will work well with one of the bricks ↑ :

Quads & Planes, cant beat them

I would say the Nutball is the plane you are looking for. It’s been made in size from micro to jumbo. https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...-RET-foamy-yet

There is a variant of the Nutball called an Underball that can be built for indoors. I am planning to try a 1.3# 6mm EPP construction a try. I will weigh everything I think I will need and then compute how big to make it. Hopefully the motor I have will make enough thrust and it will all work out. I should note that 3mm EPP was used in some of the really small Underballs. I do have some thin XPP. Will try that if need be.

This is the 24" thread: https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...e-Underball-24

I'm pretty sure there is a 14" or so thread.

You can build this any size using the simple math formula ................ https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/show...t=Smart%20Dart

Same great flight characteristics as the NutBall.

The Dart is my favorite . Since it has no curves , it would be easy to build a micro out of balsa sticks and lightweight plastic film wing/tail-feathers covering .

The Dart is based on a rubber powered free flight design, perfect for RC conversion if keep light.

Set it up as a trainer with less control throws and the proper CG, or............ lots of throw and a reward CG and you've got an aerobatic wonder with just rudder and elevator.

I made a 12-inch NutBall out of 3-mm Depron that works a treat (as the Brits would say). Doesn't handle a whole lot of wind but does pretty much everything the "big" ones do.
I know Depron is hard to find and if I had to make a second choice I would go with "stripped" DTF. It would a be a little heavier and therefore not a lively but still something super simple to put together.

Several good ideas here!

I have some reading to do.

To be clear the idea is to scratch build either a complete RTF plane or to scratch build kits for them to assemble on their own.

The budget for everything neeed to fly is the same as the price for the vapor (~$100)
